Re: Getting the Schmutz off Helms and Such
I use Goof Off. It's pretty gnarly stuff. I keep it around to remove ground paint from the sidewalk, and it does that superbly, so one day I used it to remove some tape scuffs from my gear. It is almost instant with no scrubbing, just a little wiping with a rag. But keep it away from plastic, it wil...

Re: Dukes 5'10" to 6'1", 175-190lbs, righty?
I was squired at 22, knighted then won Crown at 24, duke at 26. Another interesting thing for the ducal profile would be what kind of background did one have pre-SCA. I think I have heard his Grace Ronald claim not to have done much in competetive sports until he found he was very good at SCA comba...

I'm 5'11". I won all of my four crowns between 198 and 215 lbs.
When I joined the SCA, I weighed 134. As my fighting got better, my weight got heavier, if that is any indication.

Re: Future of SCA fighting
That's odd, I got my wife involved in the SCA when I met her. I guess I'm doing my part. She seemed to like me being a good rattan fighter. So I guess this is now about how if you are a good rattan fighter, girls will like you. How's that for some incentive? Looking at my track record, it seems to ...

OK, forgive me - big rant warning. All in all, Samurai, Early period, Late Period, Norse, French, lots of armor, little armor, spear, sword, shields, maces, etc. etc. etc... One question - ARE YOU HAVING FUN? Want to know what might drive new people away? Showing up at events or practices, or maybe...

BTW let me tell you and anyone else who uses this "temperature argument" something: stop being a wuss. Man up and wear some armor and clothing. Make it out of the right materials so you don't bake. I have some strict rules I follow and teach on this. Do not take your opponents leg or arm unless you intend to. As well, learn to block your legs and arms if you don't want to fight from your knees or with one arm. Otherwise, deal with the situation you've been presented with and make the most of i...

Aluminum is ok. Just ok. I have a ton of it. Repeated blows to aluminum turn it into mush. Really, it's fascinating. I have an aluminum shield that makes people cringe because it's so warped. It's not a good long term solution, but it's a good rigid material for coming up with prototypes and patter...

It's cheaper than paintball. More fun too. I was just gonna say that Johno. :D When me and Karhu were playing paintball regularly, I was spending upwards of $100 every time we played. Not too horrible until you consider we were playing twice a week. Then add in my gun, which after all of the mods I...

waivers are different and essentially a seneschal issue other than fighting but I will check on it. i was told in the pastthat once you have a blue card that you should never sign another waiver and that groups were told not to ask people to. This was righta fter the policy came out and may have be...

I don't have any problem with the rapier and C&T folks. At events and at practices that I have gone to over the last 5 years during the decline, there have always been more, usually double, Hardsuit than Rapiers fighters, so I don't feel that they are drawing more people to their arena. As for parti...

I did not get lucky. I found a way. At the time Atenveldt still had Artemesia and yes I traveled there during my reign as well as Caid and Outlands and attended events at nearly every Barony in the southern half of the kingdom. Travel cost is comped partially so what drag it would be to have to get...

Re: What does it take to compete at the top levels of SCA He
First I'll say that, unlike some other parts of the country that have inclement weather that makes constant practice impossible, we are spoiled as hell living in Arizona. There are maybe 2 or 3 days a year when we get rained out, other that that, I can go to 5 practices a week with a minimum of abou...

Re: Aggressive/rude marshals
From the Marshal's Handbook: 5. Marshals have the preemptory authority to remove from combat and from the field any combatant who violates the rules or scenario limits or who performs any unsafe or dishonorable act. Such removal may be discussed during the battle only if the marshal permits it. The...

Re: Kingdom Fighter numbers
I believe with our card cleanup and reissue process that Dmitri and now Roland have been doing, our numbers "on paper" are actually just the currently active fighters we have, not all of the fighters we have. Which makes sense because, as Balin pointed out, we fielded that 250 this year at Estrella ...

Re: Aggressive/rude marshals
I was the Boss. :D To clear it up a bit, at Estrella, all marshallate decisions can be appealed to and overturned by the Principal Monarch, which was me. So there was no one higher on the Marshal food chain to go to. His Majesty of the Outlands, being the other Principal Monarch, fully agreed with ...

3: An interesting note, this thread started because fighters refused to leave a field area they, in their personal great wisdom, thought was OK. First, the passive shield rule simply states this: IV. THE USE OF WEAPONS AND SHIELDS E. Shields must be controlled by the hand; use of passive shields (not controlled by the hand) will be treated as decorative armor and subject to effective blow acknowledgment. There isn't any real need for interpr...
