Re: Old Norse Naming Grammar Question
These are both good resources. I highly recommend, if you can, to take a course with an Icelander as you will learn the pronunciation and rhythm of the language much better. Sadly there are not many of us in the world and fewer who can teach the language.

Re: Old Norse Naming Grammar Question
In the Sagas the nickname involving the colour of ones hair is often just the colour. Like Gisur Hvíti (the white) or Þorstein Svarti (the black). Or bald. Egill father was Grimr, whom got the nickname Skallagrim from the word 'skali' (bald head). It stuck, as the the great skald Egill's patronym w...

Re: period illistrations or passages on vomiting
One of the Bible Moralisee depicts the Isrealites vomiting when refusing manna from God. Also in the Book of Hours of Jeanne de Evreux there is a scene where St. Louis is collecting bones of the dead and one of the figures with him is about to vomit. In text the only one that comes to my half awake ...

I know that mid calf boots show up a TON in last half of the 13th century French and English manuscripts. The one I'm currently exploring for an assignment 90% of the figures have mid calf boots or are barefoot, rarely do ankle boots or lower appear. This is a fair bit earlier than the groups you me...

So in Scandinavian tradition, Odin is depicted as an old man wearing a broad brimmed hat. What time period did this begin? When was this hat available in Scandinavian countries? Does anyone know what this hat would properly be called? Might be easier to tell if you showed us what depiction you have...

Couter of Chivalry X-Post from Philosophy of Chivalry
I apologize for how ling it has taken me to write and post my account but here it is. Its on display in the art museum next to the Catherdral. Was there two summers ago but no pictures unless the curator says so, she was out of the country that week. The no pictures has nothing to do with the armour or Jupon, its because it is an art gallery and has copyrighted material in it and the...
