Perhaps adding cheeks, then age or darken everything but the skull. To the skull apply a mirror finish for contrast. For some reason the idea of a reflective and perfect skull mask gazing out if an antiqued helm sounds visually appealing.

I don't have any photos of it. The entire assembly proved to be too bulky to use so I went back to a more normal setup. The problem as I recall was the lower cross hilt near the pommel. It kept binding up my wrist at full extention on swings.

You might take a gander at knotwolf's stuff. I have a clinker style helm he did. I rather like that construction instead of the more common spangen or dome type. I know he is big on ornamentation so there might be something there that inspires you.
