I found hockey girdles to be a bit too bulky. Some people I've talked to say they bind up, some have no problems. I went with these myself. I took out the large thigh pads, traced the outline on some 14 oz. leather, and put the pad and leather back in place.

Don't see why not. I fight in knee height boots, turned down at the calf, that are covered by my pants. I wear my period shoes with my soft kit and added a sole to it so I wouldn't destroy the leather.

Alright, so I'm biased. But you can do hidden (and inexpensive) armor for almost any period out of plastic. I'm sure someone local to you has experience with that and can help you build a suit.

I think this came up a little while ago. To my knowledge, no extant sources point to this method and the Tapestry is the only thing I've seen to suggest it. The idea is pretty intriguing though. It sort of makes sense, at least to me.
