Thanks for the great responses everyone, the part about helmets with brims was especially useful. Sorry about my slow reply though, I got caught up in end-of-term homework. I'll go with a kettle helm so that I can get a bargrill on it.

What type of helm is best for wearing with glasses?

This is just a question of curiosity, but what type of helm have all you SCAers found to be best for wearing over glasses so that they don't get mashed? I'm not in the SCA myself, but I want to know so that I can make something that will work well in case I ever do join. Right now I think a kettle h...

I'll make it with two halves and a center band, since I'll be using Jurgen's pattern from the archive. Thanks for the tip about painting on the inside, but it won't be necessary because I will be using stainless steel again. (Can you tell that I know a guy who gives me stainless scraps for free?)

Okay then, I'll make the kettle. Were they usually painted at all, or sanded? I think it would look rather nice if I were to paint it with the same colours as the shield.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. Now I have a question, Do you recommend making a kettle helmet or great helm for a newbie helmet project? I am leaning towards a kettle helmet, but I have heard great helms recommended morre often.

My armour so far

Well, being the lurker that I am, I haven't posted here in a long time and I thought that it was about time that I showed some pictures of what I've made with the information I've found here. I wasn't aiming for any particular time period when I made all this, I was just practicing and getting exper...

Thanks everyone. Boner: My maille is 14 guage galvanized steel with 14 guage copper along the bottom edge and 16 guage copper on the sleeves. I would have made all the copper 14 guage, but I ran out and all I had left was 16. Halberds: I'll make a head for it once I've finished making my helmet. It'...

Displaying Chainmail

I finished making a stand for my chainmail a few days ago, so I thought I would share it. I just cut a bit of plywood into a generally torso-shaped piece, then cut out another piece shaped like a chest seen from the side, and put slots in them so that the would fit together. Then I drilled some hole...

hammer uses

What sort of things would a 3 lb mini sledge be useful for? It has a 1 1/4" face approx. and I could grind it down for something. I just bought it at a yard sale and figured it could be handy, but don't have any specific use for it.

I usually have my grinder clamped snugly in a bench vice with the grinding surface facing upwards. That way I can hold the workpiece with two hands. The workpiece is usually lighter than the grinder, so I find that I end up with more control this way. I might be doing something wrong without knowing...
