One missing from your list there is Herzog, which is Duke. Figured you might be interested in that. The name I use here is actually an ancestor I have....and in paperwork it said of him "Im dienst von Herzog Wittelsbach von Bayern"....in the service of Duke Wittelsbach of Bavaria. So, the von Stadle...

At the risk of getting back on topic....I think the Crusades influenced the modern world more. Normans played a role in the first Crusade but were not the main force, and most Normans in it were from Norman Italy except Robert of Normandy. Bohemond and Tancred were both Italian Norman. THe other lea...

If you want the Holy Lands Crusades (and not Prussia/Livonia in Baltic), then the latest you would get is 1291, with the fall of Acre and the Holy Land. By which time the Great Helm was still in widespread use. It is possible that a few open-faced bascinets were starting to be used then, but I can't...

From what I've read, the best preservations of Ancient Greek scientific and philosophical thought were through Arabic scholars, whose work was reintroduced to Europe by the Sephardi Jews after the reconquista. It's been a few years though (and I'm away from my books), so I've almost certainly forgo...

At the risk of getting back on topic ;),....apparently tarantulas don't necessarily mean what we think. The town Taranto gave its name to a different spider...a version of the wolf spider or black widow. So, seeing how later in history the name attached itself to the larger animal, it seems the army...

Last I checked Swedes weren't the only Vikings , and for that matter they were the lesser of the three nations in their endevours (conquest wise anyway). Besides, just because one nation, or even region, favors a style, that doesn't mean all do. The woman's dress seems more ancient to me, remin...

Although interesting, the fencing gloves are not what I am looking for. I know my topic doesn't suggest that, but I am looking for maille gloves from circa 1200's-transition period. Anything after that would not fit the outfit my friend is considering collecting. He wants medieval, not Ren.

It is a shame they didn't have them on display in Wisby, I was there this summer during the Medieval festival in August....very cool. Interesting stuff posted here though, thank you. I guess there is a very real chance there indeed were such gloves/gauntlets. I am interested in that statement by the...

Yes, that is exactly what I meant. I figured as much, but didn't know if it was just something the armorers are selling these days or if there is a historical basis. Thank you.

Maille Gauntlets (Were they real?)

I did a search and came up empty, so I figured I would make a topic. Were there actually maille gauntlets/gloves historically? I know of the mittens, but I can't find certain proof of maille gloves being used. I am trying to help a friend do research for a future outfit, so any help would be appreci...

Judging by the fact they were friars and not monks....I'd say no. But, I haven't read it so I can't say for certain if it is bad or good (and they just were stupid about not differentiating between the two).

Most sources have it more of a light grey such as this http://www.sugareestitches.com/fabrics/ ... htGrey.jpg

Oswyn is right about how you could really try and see, but I think the effort vs payoff would not be anywhere near equal. Most sources point towards the color I linked.

I only heard of Ice Flacon recently, though I can't bring myself to buy Stainless Steel....they just didn't have such a thing back then. Similarly, who would expect that the "no-questions-asked" return policy was actually a typo? "No-questions-answered" is the correct policy for Sussen. Also, it was...

Woops, sorry, yes I am talking of armor . However, for footwear I had some "Turnboots" made by Armlann, in fact I am pretty sure the ones shown on his site are mine, since I was the prototype. Admittedly, the maille chausses didn't seem to fit 100% right over them. The leather soles threw me o...

Greetings, That's too bad, man. I had a very pleasurable and smooth transaction with Von Sussen. I remember the mail shirt in the eBay sale wasn't the same as the one being offered. He explained it in the text of the page, but for folks who are more visually based, it may cause confusion. Hjlmr inn...

I don't know if you consider Osprey books a good source, but they are loaded with such configured chausses throughout at least the 2nd quarter of the 13th Century onward. Come to think of it, most depictions I have seen during that period of such chausses (and tie-backed ones).

Von Sussen Debacle

I know some people have had good experiences with this vendor, but I am writing this to warn others of what CAN happen. I ordered a pair of Maille Chausses from him in early November 2007 after being told they would fit my dimensions (which I emailed him[Karl]). The page about them showed a standard...
