Hill sprints are a brilliant mix of both anaerobic and aerobic activity. Doing a good session of these multiple times per week gets you pretty fit pretty quick.

Good fighters seek to minimize their energy consumption through good technique and efficient movement. Also, fighting is a mostly anaerobic activity (The chemical reactions giving you energy are doing it in a tricky way without oxygen.) If weight loss is your goal, make sure your exercise plan conta...

you can't feint a thrust without a tip, so i would say you need a tip to do what you are describing. I would only be be alarmed if my opponent was trying to do it and missed.

The last time I talked to him they were trying to convince the marshals that there is no good reason for disallowing blade strikes while half-swording, but I haven't heard that it was changed. I guess one good reason would be to prevent the 'quarterstaff' effect. If you have one hand on the hilt, a...

Re: Fighting award names (SCA)

I think you would get a shorter answer if you asked which kingdoms do NOT have GoA awards for fighting, service, and A&S. Is rattan combat that small a percentage of fighting in Lochac? Good point Irish. I believe the West does not, any others? Having not visited other kingdoms, I can't really comp...

Fighting award names (SCA)

Hi guys! Lochac is considering implementing a few GoA level awards which we have not had before. Currently in Lochac there are only three GoA level awards: - A blank GoA for extraordinary service to the kingdom - Order of the White Scarf (excellence in Rapier) - Lochac Company of Archers (excellence...

I was going to say exactly what Sean said.

Singing and swimming are great for building lung capacity and working the muscles that control your abdomen and lungs.

Regular swimming is also excellent for those with back issues.

And both are fun! imo anyway.

I dont know many doctors who would approve of anyone being hit with sticks.

Except the ones, of course, who are SCA combatants.

1. At the top, it makes no difference. 2. Using a different style or form 'to get a competitive edge' is for those who have no confidence in their ability to improve. 3. I am also a believer that sword and indestructible shield is probably the most successful form for sca combat, and the only edge s...

hey, im a nordic guy with a heater! but as 90% of S&S fighters in lochac use a heater, that may not be helpful.

dantes point was an excellent one. make the most of the teachers you have around you.

those chess pieces are supposed to be from mid to late 12th century, am i right?

well done on making efforts on appearance. i just slap ridiculous amounts of pva glue down, pretty much like painting it on. lay down the canvas and spread it out so theres no bumps. at this point i would put edging on but it sounds like you're dealing with an already constructed shield. so i guess ...

part of it is a sense for the direction the fight is taking, which takes time.

and i guess, as usual, that most fighting problems can be solved by better movement. when blocking, try to move in a way that gives you a better view and reduces your opponents options for attack.

my first guess is that wool will be noticeably warmer than linen because it traps more air. but hey, if its cheap, i would try it. i think the strength of gambesons lies in the quilting, not just the mass within. the protection comes from the 'bulginess' of the quilts while the heat loss is mostly t...
