If you go the soapstone route, and if you carve dry, you should wear a good mask as well. I hit em up on ebay. But the person I buy from I buy 10 horn lots, and they are not always pairs (I use them for horn worked spoons, combs etc plus drinking horns so it doesnt matter) but I usually pay an average of about $7 tp $10 a horn, pre polished.

It is my favorite type of fighting in the SCA, perhaps because I only get to do it during melees, and I am fighting other styles all the time, I dont know. But I really love it.

I like the favor idea, but to even make it more personal, you could give a favor with a period feel to it.

I use a mix of 60% beeswax 40% parafin, and have never had any trouble with it, but fighting primarily in Minnesota and Wisconsin, it really only gets hot enough to soften it at all in July, but it doesn't soften enough to lose its protective abilities for me. I have been happy with it.
