Re: Looking for generous souls

I have my first helm, it is not all that pretty, but it is protective. I would be more than willing to send it on to you, but it is on the large side. If you still need a helm, let me know. (I have a 25 inch massive Scottish skull, and can never find helms to fit me, so if your awesome husband happe...

Re: Where to buy linen?

My wife buys a lot of our linen from the mentioned fabric store.com from the grab bag section, remnants big enough to make a tunic or occasionally a dress, often for about four to five dollars a yard.

Look, it's a replica of a SCA bascinet. http://www.amazon.com/Medieval-Wire-Mask-Bascinet-Warrior/dp/B001DTTUGM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1337557971&sr=8-2 Or a $30 youth helmet. Yeah, assuming it fit a kid, that would be a nicer looking helmet than your average hockey helmet, for sure. And cheaper too.

Re: Warning to sellers of buckles and other cast metal items

I am a professional bronze sculptor by trade, and we see this all the time as well. I have a friend who was walking through K Mart and saw one of those plastic garden alligators that come in three pieces, the head, body and tail so it looks like it is swimming on your lawn. She thought it looked ver...

Wait, you can't just shoehorn an arts marshal like Pillow fighting into one, broad category. What about florentine pillows, Great Pillow, the list goes on. I have seen some wield couch cushions with great authority. But in the end, Sean is right. Regardless of outcome, the fighters he mentioned *are...

So, resurrecting this thread for a couple of reasons.... First, I was surprised to get the hauberk I pre-ordered in the mail today, well in advance of the time His Grace warned us this could take. I was honestly not expecting to see it until after Pennsic, and now I will have it for the entire war s...

Getting mail to go over my tunic, and hoping to cap my head in new helmet by the end of the year, something with as little bar grill as possible. Would love a helm from Knotwolf or Jackie, but have to wait on the discretionary income that does not show up until later in the year. Otherwise, streamli...

Re: WARNING. Post- BoTN plate armour freakout. WARNING

If 2% of the people who are all fired up now for BotN actually get the armor, you could see a huge influx of people wanting to do Combat of the Thirty as well. There is no way this will be bad for either community, imo.

Eventually I'd like to see an injury count by type, team, etc... I think Team USA is behind in the standings but WAY ahead in the injury rate (as in, the injury rate for Team USA is low). Yeah, I would be curious about that too. Kinda like to see how many and how serious the injuries are overall as...

Re: Follow the Battle of Nations Team

Sometimes it looked to me like the literally decades of SCA melee experience our team has caused instinct to take over. The things they were doing would have shredded their opponents in an SCA melee, but the Russian and Ukrainian teams seem to really have their game honed when it comes to this speci...

Re: Scandinavian hat for sunnier & warmer climes?

I have to admit, the lack of a good, brimmed hat is probably the only thing I do not like about my 9th century Norse persona. This year, I have resolved to not burn my head and get a hat regardless, and sadly, a hat with a brim.

I used to do WWII. But the guy I travelled with quit, and kids/job etc made it fall by the wayside. The SCA is a lot more fun for the entire family, at least my family, and its really my friends more than the activities themselves that keep me going back. I have always loved reenacting, and while th...

Zoombang has brought my in-armor impression up 100%. When I wear and fight in a blue tunic, I look like I am wearing a blue linen tunic, and am not, in fact a hunch back. I was having a hard time getting my low profile armor to be low profile before. I just need to get mail--the second to the last p...

Being one of the three folks Wilhelm spoke about, having a lot of love from and for zoombang, these look awesome. That said, the hands are a different animal. There is no way I would ever trust my fingers to zoombang alone. As someone else said, it is phenomenal under a little armor. Wear it under m...

Re: SCA and Living History conflicts

I do a 9th Century Norseman persona, and can vouche for the Zoombang pads. Shorts and shirt and linen over that, eventually mail over that (when I can afford it). Ideally, I would find a helm that can hide the bargrill, but for now, that and my hand protection are the only things that show in my kit...

If you go the soapstone route, and if you carve dry, you should wear a good mask as well. Breathing the dust of most anything you can carve for this process (antler, bone, rock, plaster etc) is VERY bad for your lungs, as in potentially fatal. This is particularly true if you use any power tools lik...

I like the favor idea, but to even make it more personal, you could give a favor with a period feel to it.

I use a mix of 60% beeswax 40% parafin, and have never had any trouble with it, but fighting primarily in Minnesota and Wisconsin, it really only gets hot enough to soften it at all in July, but it doesn't soften enough to lose its protective abilities for me. I have been happy with it.
