I've seen some pretty neat examples of painted sallets in museums and over the internet. They're a little later than the time frame in question but I think there is historical precedence there. I have also seen painted great helms in period artwork, though I suppose you have to take those kinds of t...

hey Warc, I have a 24 inch head, would the medium fit? or should i go large? on the klappviser? I'd go for the large. I've got a 22in noggin' and there isn't much room for additional padding in mine, besides an arming cap. The adjustable liner allows for some "fudge" factor as well, so that you can...

Maintain funds to refund all orders which have been prepaid or deposit on at a moments notice. Then if life kicks you in the nuts you've got it covered. This is great advice - Major companies do this as well. For instance, Microsoft has a practice of maintaining enough funds to pay wages and operat...

I have the Klappvisor in size medium. Great for the price, lightyears ahead of the crap greathelm I had before. Thickness and fit is good. It didn't come with a chinstrap, though. This one came with an adjustable liner installed, which is nice. Best of all I can wear it with my glasses on, so I'm no...

The above pictured gaunts will be on my hands in short order folks. When they are, I will pad them, glove up, and put them through their paces to let you all know how they stand up to SCA-style abuse, as well as what I did to pad them. I'm pretty confident that they will do just fine. The kit I'm pu...

Theres also a big religious component to the whole thing. The Battle of Tours occurs in the 732 AD and very shortly afterwards the general con...

Hi all, I'm looking for a used SCA-legal helm, perhaps a used bascinet or even a strong greathelm, preferably made of 14ga and 16ga semi-polished steel and preferably with a visor and/or chinstrap. I know nothing of the particular piece, but judging purely on design it looks like an Italio-Norman from the 12th century. The rounded faceguard and eye slots combined with the conical nature of the helm itself exudes the norman style of that era.

It's hard to say. Generally the monastic military orders allowed non-order brethren to don some sort of uniform that identified them as such. For example in the order of st mary in jerusalem (the teutonic order) their non-order comrades wore a similar surcoat but with the tao cross as opposed to the...
