Re: Norse Slave Trade
why wouldn't christian danes play in the slave game? With pagans, but not with other Christians. And Orthodox Christians were considered pagan-like by Roman Christians. Why? I believe there were several papal bulls regarding Christian slaves owned by Christians. Somethng about going to hell....

Re: Pennsic pics
Thanks, man! You know, as I look over Pennsic photos I have to wonder: This is a MAJOR event. SERIOUS opportunity to show off, be impressive, etc. So why the hell do so few people do even the most basic cosmetic "fixes" on their gear? So many crappy, scratched, messed up shields, so many rusty and ...

Although I've used this exact pattern before myself and it works.

I generally stick to a linen hood. Its lightweight and it shades my eyes really well. Its easily constructed from a single yard of linen with one line of stiching, plus hemming. I also have a lightweight woolen 6-panel hood I wear as well.

500 seems like a lot
but then I have one of the smallest cars on the market, my set up cost less than 250, and I can stand up in it, or even share it with someone else.

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
pretty sure the A frame has been in use from the Egyptians until um, today, for anyone that needed shelter for a night or more. I meants, its basically a blanket or a sail thrown over a support in its most basic form. Not every single Soldier, Warrior, Knight had an elaborate set up. So...what is yo...

I am familiar with the set up you are referring to, most often called a Long House style set up. They seem to be quite effective, especially for families or close friends. You end up with two private rooms on either end and a shared space in the middle.

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
so that sounded bad and judgemental of me. I understand there are reasons. If youre new to the game, its not expected to be 100% accurate or have the entire set up, thats something you build up to. As for the cost, its already been argued that in the long run, period is cheaper than modern. Personal...

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
. Do you think most of the people who "went off to war" had brocade carpets to stand on inside thier tents? I do hope a gentleman would have his minions carry his carpets for his tent, so he can campaign in appropriate style ;) In all seriousness, Essex is documented about having lots of his campai...

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
My FCS tent has seen rain as well, particularly, the Rapture Rainstorm of last year's Border Raids, Where the sudden storm and wind detroyed more than one pop-up. Didn't leak, didn't fall down. Here's my beef with this. You are recreating the middle ages. From what I understand (although I havent se...

The tent if from Fall Creek Sutlery and pretty popular. I know at least a dozen folk that have the same one, more often used for two people than one.
I'll have to get a pic of the day shade set up since I cant seem to find one at the moment.

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
nothing special. Only thing that had to be broken down to fit in my itty bitty car was the 9 foot long center pole, which I cut in half, added a metal sleeve from Home Depot, and bolt together when I raise the tent. The two side poles are 7 feet and JUST fit in my car, from front-to-rear windshield,...

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
Not bad right? Packs in a minicooper, period correct, more than amble space, for less than $200 counting wood and all. the double doors allow airflow and I've since added two more poles that allow the whole thing to be opened up as a day shade where 8 people can comfortably join me for relaxing. I k...

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
I regularly see this from the other perspective. I'm the guy with the ugly nylon. My situation determines it. My wife doesn't play and I have a 3-year old. I usually camp at one event per year. My standard setup is an hand-me-down easy-up with cloth side walls and a tiny land pimple under it. Every...

so I'm definitely going with Ceadda. I just need an "of (place name)" that I like. Either that, or take my Master's norse name, with his permission, and add the ubiqutous "-son" to the end of it, as he did when he was squired.
Ceadda Arnulfson?

Saw the exhibit today and was blown away. Loved it. Want to go back again. I mentioned the demo to a few of the girls who worked there and they said how well it was received. They said they hoped you would come back again. If you do, count me in.
