Re: Celtic/Gaelic armor??
If you're going for the naked Gaul look, I've seen photos of a leather suit of armor that was made in the Musculata style, but from undyed tooling leather so it looked like sun-tanned skin. IIRC they also had tattooed the leather as well. Granted it was noticeable at the joins (Like at the elbows an...

Re: Store bought table goes "medieval"
Where would I go about finding images of viking style work benches or tables? Would I simply look at the tables they used in their mead halls? Perhaps some of the churches in Iceland?

Re: Leather awl advice
I use a CS Osborne stitching awl for most mid-weight leathers. ( http://www.zackwhite.com/Osborne-Stitching-Awl-2-14_p_1070.html ) For heavier stuff I use a drill. :P For lighter stuff I use an awl I made myself from filing down a steel nail, re-tempering it, and embedding it in an antler tine. It u...

Re: Simple Girdle Purse
Ha! That certainly is a lot quicker than when I stitched mine! What I found with these pouches is that lighter weight leather is a lot easier to use on girdle purses. My favorite is goat hide, though calfskin is an EXCELLENT material, too! Another tip: use an edge skiver along the stitched edge to m...

Originally in the Off Topic section, but I'm reposting here since this is more of the target audience I'm going for.... I'm looking to exchange links with other craftsmen and craftswomen on my new site. I'm looking for all sorts of reenacting/recreation sites, though I ask that you not be a leather ...

My New Site
I just opened my own leather working website, recently. It's not 100% up and running, but I'd like everyone to check it out and give me some feedback, please. I don't have the shopping cart up and running, yet, but that's because I'm working on linking it to Paypal at the moment. Once that's done, t...

Just out of curiosity, but has anyone tried submerging leather in water/hide glue mixtures? Yes, in conjunction with baking. Maelgwyn showed it to me when I went down to visit him for the day once. Works well. Do you happen to remember what ratios were used? How hard did the leather get when prepare...

Re: Help making char cloth
I've always punched two holes; one in the lid and one in the bottom of the tin. I place the tin on a bed of hot coals, so you're not placing it directly on a flame. Like above posters have said, the smoke will billow out of the holes, and occasionally a flame will spout out one of the holes. Typical...

Re: Todays Veg Tanned Leather for Garments
Goatskin or pigskin tend to be the softest that I've worked with. Calfskin could work, but being that heavy you would need to soften it considerable. You could try softening it by running it against a rigid object. I tend to soften my belt strips by running the suede side against a metal bar or one ...

Re: Roman Belts - Not Balteus
Since it's a Gladiator version of the garment, would it be more prudent just to wear a Balteus over top of the garment and just make the Subligaculum over sized to accommodate for the width of the Balteus?

Roman Belts - Not Balteus
I'm looking for what sort of belt of girdle would be used to hold up the Subligaculum. I've been able to find plenty of information on the Balteus, but that's a bird of a different feather, so to speak. I just need to know what sort of buckle (If any) would be used as a Roman 'underwear girdle'.
