Re: shoe covers - anyone ever try these?
so simply put these covers are nice for those who wish to use them in my opinion THIS! Is exactly what is wrong with the SCA on a whole. Good enough, acceptable, it will pass, no one will care etc etc These things do not look any better than a pair of Reeboks. Trying to make a silk purse out of a s...

Re: A word about meadmaking sanitation...
That's why it's called an opinion. FWIW, my meads are typically still good and stable at 6+ years, and examples have been found that were still good at 17 (and by "good" I mean "awesome").

Re: shoe covers - anyone ever try these?
Need support? Don't spend money on something that looks stupid. Spend it on orthotics that fit in your period shoes. This is not rocket science. ;) Furthermore, cleats are doing you NO favors if you have bad feet/ankles/knees. Cleats are arguably the cause of more SCA-combat-related sports injuries...

Re: A word about meadmaking sanitation...
Meads and wines are generally less sensitive to sanitation issues than beer is, due to the higher alcohol content. But a litle effort goes a long way. I prefer 1-Step to iodophor because it's non-rinsing properties are not affected concentration. I disagree about boiling mead must; in my opinion it ...

Re: A word about meadmaking sanitation...
Bulk aging works, but you'll want to purge the headspace with CO2 or N2 to prevent oxidation, unless the carboy is filled to just under the stopper.

From the phrasing, I assume this means in a tournament. There, I prefer to take a knee/salute while loudly acknowledging the blow. In a battle, I want people to fall down dead. I have see far too many "tactical deaths", where they leap and fall somewhere awkward for the other side, or disrupt the op...

Re: Religion in the SCA (or not)
Kind of taking the theme from another thread, but I don't want to hijack it... My persona would have been religious. I am not, but I want to play a more accurate game for ME. One idea I had is in the form of scrolls. People in Northshield get scrolls all the time in the form of rune fonts or sumii ...

At MTT, Sunday morning they have a "multi-timeline tactical" (that's pronounced, "free for all"). I have gone out in Roman armor, wearing sunglasses and armed with a Star Wars blaster, as well as a cap and ball revolver and grenades. Last year though, they changed the "rules", and said you could onl...

I wear a set of Street-Hockey pants under my brachae; much lighter and better ventilated than ice hockey pants. Works pretty well. Actually, if it is softened in the heat, it will still do quite a bit to protect you, just not as much as if it were stiff. Even softened, the wax still stiffens the leather quite a bit. Historically speaking, wax is simply a bad idea, as it is less effective at hardening as some other methods, and ...

Motorcycle helmets are designed to stop exactly one major impact; the foam is destroyed in the process. They are far better than SCA helmats at stopping that one impact; contrary to what Konstantin said, it is the resilient foam that we generally use in SCA helmets that decelerates the blow then ret...

Okay, so why would a LH-er want to play in the SCA? So far I've read (and agree with): A) it's a break from being 'onstage' to the public. B) It's a chance to learn more about other period kits from the 'high authenticity' end of the SCA's spectrum C) it's a chance to use/experiment with those thin...

Chef de Chambre once told me, maybe three years back, that he didn't think hardly any SCAdians moved into Living History or other painstaking recreationist disciplines. The SCA is not for folks who want a focus on one period, one place, one culture. It is not a group for those who desire a high threshold for quality of research or material presentation. Sure it is. What it isn't good for is for folks that want everyone else to have the same focus and threshold as ...
