Re: Experimental helmet forging
Well, after some years I've decided to resurrect this thread. So I haven't had the time to work on armour in quite some time, but about a year ago I talked a few of my friends into forming a band. We meet every couple of weeks (if we're lucky) and get a few hours of hammering in. Our mandate is to l...

Carter, once you crack the shoe puzzle can I commission a pair from you? I admire the hustle and I would like to follow your example but I 100% don’t have time to learn medieval shoe making lol

Re: Experimental helmet forging
I think that the neck should be cut up a bit higher in back. Yeah, it looks weird as it is now. I was just waiting to see if I wanted to draw the cheeks out a bit more before I do more trimming What I'd like to see in this front view is for the widest point of the helmet to be at or just above the ...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
It is a common misconception that helmet skulls should be equidistant from the head of the wearer. They tend to have a lot of crush space in the top, something missing in most modern pieces. I don't see anything wrong with your drawing. I think the drawing looks good, i'm just trying to reconcile t...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
I would be inclined to treat the helmet skull and the visor as separate things. First make the skull fit properly, then make the visor be in the right place. Mac I spent a few minutes just now trying to work things out while treating them as a unit, and quickly realized how badly that was going for...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
Cool project! But remember that the visor doesn't really fit the skull. To me it seems that the visor needs to be pulled down a few millimeters at least. Taking a close look, it seems like the royal armouries website shows this helmet with the visor attached in two different ways, depending on the ...

Cool project! But remember that the visor doesn't really fit the skull. To me it seems that the visor needs to be pulled down a few millimeters at least. Okay, good tip. I gathered a bunch of reference for central hinged visors and this one seems like a super common type so I figured probably ok. D...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
Made some progress on the bascinet. I decided my best bet would be this one in the Royal Armouries. If the dimensions they give are correct, it's fairly short at around 10" deep. I got this thing down to 10 1/4", so I should have a little wiggle room, but I can't get that number to reconcile with my...

Nope. Still up for grabs, although there are bids on 3 and 4 that were made after the end time I made up so I’m that case I suppose I could accept bids till money changes hands?RandallMoffett wrote:I was off line most of Thursday and Friday. Did these sell?

Experimental Helmet Auction!
So I've got quite a pile of helmet prototypes building up from my helmet experiments and I figured its time to get rid of some. The bidding starts now and will close in a week, on Friday June 12 at 5pm EDT. The winner pays shipping. I'm accepting bids from anyone whether or not they're a member of t...

Hmm yup that’s it exactly mac. I’ve only just started to make the forehead and back of the skull properly pointy, and it’s already getting too tight to my skull at those points. I’m sort of leaning to the scale model of the finished piece myself. I feel like it would complete the dramatic effect of ...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
So Kevin Legg pointed out on Facebook that my sallet is too short and I had to dive back into my design process and get to the bottom of it. My design process has been pretty sloppy so far, since my main focus has been getting a good bucket, with the actual armouring part being a secondary concern. ...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
Built a new spring stack for the hammer today. I made it one layer thicker this time, which worked fairly well. It now runs smoother and hits a bit harder. The down side is that the change in height at the pivot point raised the die height a bunch. Because of geometry I guess. Not a problem with my ...

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring
Nice work Augusto! It does make me a little nervous to see you using tapered shanks in a hardy hole though. That can lead to damage on the edges of the hole and worst case scenario it can crack the heel off an anvil. Tapered shanks belong in tapered holes and straight walled hardy holes want to hold...

Yeah I think they have a few different potential futures. Probably I’ll iust keep squashing new blanks and not actually finish any helmets until a) I get sick of squashing or b) i stop for the summer when it gets too hot.
