Re: Fake armour at wisby? - Dissertation research

The way I understood it, the armour was made to make a smaller force seem superior - All bark no bite sort of thing. Of course it may have offered *some* protection, but the main idea was simply intimidation.

Thanks for the quote guys!

Fake armour at wisby? - Dissertation research

Somewhere, at some point in time, I heard that fake coats of plates were produced by some noble or other to make his army appear more intimidating  Before you all run off, I'm *sure* I remember it being something to do with the battle of Wisby, though I may be mistaken. I'm doing my dissertatio...

I won't reply to each individual post as I would normally do, because I fear I'll only stem this discussion - I'd hate to miss any.
Just a quick post to thank you all for your suggestions and links. I can see me using particularly heavy use of Ruel's work! (Assuming you're ok with this Ruel?)

Hey guys! I'm in the middle of researching my for my dissertation here in South Wales. Beautiful place to be for a castle lover! So, the title of my diss is: 'Armour evolved dramatically through the 14th to the 16th centuries. Was this change caused through its use as a defensive item or as a status ...

Books on the migration of armour styles?

I'm in the middle of an essay, but could do with some help finding some sources. I need books, preferably available online, on the migration (or evolution) of armour styles, and their influences on armour styles of the time in other areas. Good examples are things like English styles of armour havin...

Capwell's 'Hero' armour - St. Maurice. References needed

I'm in the middle of an essay as we speak, with the question being on how interest in history has always been the same. I've decided to focus primarily on armour. In particular, I'd like to mention the armour made for Tobias Capwell a few years back, based on a 15thc. painting of St. Maurice in the ...

While the harness looks great in these photos, it looked even better in reality. I'm chuffed to bits that, on the very day I authorised, i got to swing a stick at that harness!

Braies cord

I have recently finished sewing a set of Braies, and started a set of hose. So far so good on the lot, but I'm about ready to put a pull chord into the braies to keep them tight. My mum has been insistent on historical materials, and has even hand sewn most of the visible stitches, so it'd be a sham...

Agreed. I'd also add that, whether medieval or modern techniques be used, I'd prefer the book stuck to one. I'd assume people would pay more for something showing period construction, but you'd likely receive higher numbers of sales for something showing modern construction, as it would be more ope...

What he said. If this book were to become an analog of ToMAR or the book Dr. Capwell is putting out, I'd happily spring for as much as $100, and *might* -depending on reviews, or if I saw it in person- even go a little further north than that. Unlike Greg I have no problem with the inclusion of mod...

$1200 seems to be the price of most in-stock armouries
I've been quoted, and not felt I was being overcharged, £1200 (around $2000) for one made to measure.

As others have said, though, quality is key. We need pictures before we can say much!
