I found this quite interesting, and was curious about everyone's thoughts on Ilya's interpretation of armor aesthetics.

Re: Is this really a samurai shield?
Eff, what's wrong with the picture? I came across another picture of a shield with similar shape. I think he was referring to the shield portrayed in the horrible print from the original post. http://i831.photobucket.com/albums/zz238/estcrh/db890a7e-b1b7-4866-9600-3ae512522ef4.jpg~original This is ...

Re: Another Samurai question
I would take the approach of helping the young-un make the armor, that way you do not have to lace anything. Then he has a pretty set of armor, and you are not out hours and hours of lacing. He is also more likely to stay around, as they have put more investment into the armor than "got it from some...

I'm choosing the colour for my do-maru, and you mention a Crimson Red...would that be more akin to a fire engine red, or a candy-apple red, or in between? Thanks! You should be able to do either. I have taken energy gels (Hammer Gel) while fighting melees because it goes down easier than solid food, and is good energy. But anything beyond that is kinda dumb IMO.

I used a 15" long piece of large rail road track for many years until I found my 125 pounder. You may also head to your scrap yard/steel yard and look through their scrap for a steel block. Patience can pay off (my 125 was free) so get something that will get you started, and keep your eyes open for...

I didn't have any issues getting my helm from AB. I think it may have been at most a week late, but I don't remember details, that was 3 years ago. I heard a rumor that the BoD was looking at moving the cutoff date to 1700. So Mr. Sparrow may be getting his way. I do not have the documentation to back this up. I heard it 2nd hand, and do not know where the BoD minutes are kept so I cannot verify. I hope I am wrong.

I do knapping and know many people who do. I can clean up blanks for you (and send pics of stuff Ive done). You can do it yourself with a home made ishi stick and a couple of leather pieces. The ishi stick is some solid copper wire in the end of a 12"*3/4" dowel. put the length of wire in a drill an...

The short answer is no. The long answer is there may be a few individuals that can make you a kit. After Black Hydra (Mykaru) closed shop, there isn't an armory that does japanese much. Most of us have resorted to making our own. You might try asking here: http://tousando.proboards.com/index.cgi I k...

What I was told (and what I try for) pell work is to establish technique, fighter practice is to test it. Pell work in the beginning should be slow. So you can make sure that your technique is correct. Later there are drills that are done at a faster speed, but you need to fire shots correctly first...

I would start by fighting sword and shield for a year. the reason for this, is one, it is the basis for 90% or more of SCA fighting, learning to be competent with this style will help you defeat it in combat. Two, it sends the message that you are serious about fighting. When I started I was a die h...
