Just a quick bump for you, I have the exact same helm and last practice I got a few "damn your helm!" comments from the glancing blows the top of it caused. Quite happy with it.

Quick related question. There is an award of a "Torse"... do people generally not wear a torse on their helm until they receive such an award? Or is that more for heraldry? My greathelm would look great (har har!) with a torse and mantle, but I wouldn't want to seem like I am overstepping myself.

Pardon the sleepy man wearing it (just done 5 hours of a 10 hour drive). Charles de Blois pattern from Tasha is coming along. Just finishing up the holes for the lacing and it's good to go. I think it's at around 35 hours of work or so at the moment. [img]http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/3184/smw110...

My novice attempt... http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/5764/shield3.jpg It looks more lopsided than it really is... it wasn't lying flat due to the shield basket. Okay... it's still fairly uneven, but still, my first shield, and the paint fumes got to me or some other such excuse. I'd never do anot...

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g238/LexBaird/Shield.jpg So, here it is so far. Still waiting on a welded bar for the grip. 23"x29.5" overall. I have such a long way to go... comparing that to the crude spray painting I was doing on my first shield yesterday. There is a mountain to climb!

Perhaps a dumb question, but how do you keep your dog from chewing on your shield when you edge it in rawhide?

I imagine the first time I forgot to put it up high on something she'd go to town thinking it was her lucky day.

This is clearly anti-Christian in the intent of the scholars who peddle the view. I am not saying that you, Audax, are anti-Christian in your intent, but clearly the chief peddlers of the view are, and they have no wieght, and little impact outside of the academic circles they dominate. Playing goalie in college for our roller hockey team, I had a slapshot catch me between my "helmet" and my chest "armor". A couple millimeters from my adam's apple. I believe one of the bodies found at the Towton mass grave was figured to be mid-late 40s. And a few more were in the mid-late 30s. He was the one who was the most messed up too, massive facial wound from an earlier battle that had healed and such. If I recall correctly, during/before that battle, y...

Hmm, I'll have to look into the wood paneling for the back. I spent last night drilling all the dang holes. Wasn't so bad for the majority of the shield, but in the reinforced corner it was a pita... it's probably about 3/4" thick there and I had to be REAL careful not to snap the bit and go slow. I...

Thanks for the advice! I'd tried doing some searching but mostly what I'd found was on painting methods or on what to use to attach the canvas, not the method for tying it down... if that makes sense. Sounds like I'll go with 3/4" to 1" spaced holes, about 1" from the edge of the shield and tie with...

Covering a shield

I have an aluminum shield (my first shield) that I'm trying to figure out the best way to cover with canvas. Shield is already edged using the edging from Windrose. So far the plan is to use a spray adhesive to get the canvas in place. From that point I'm torn between putting a bunch of holes (1" or...

Going to cover it in canvas anyway, so I'm not too worried about having overlarge holes with washers to cover. Just cuts out weight I guess. Speed holes .:D
