So, to clarify a bit. Hot rolled - slightly more malleable and cheaper to buy, but needs to have the scale cleaned off if you want to make the work piece shiny or blued. Since all my metal bits are painted (hey it's period and makes it less hot in summer and less rust issues), I use hot rolled mild sheet, which is about 25% cheaper than the shiny cold rolled stuff.
