Re: where to find sir ashir, rising sun leather ?
Just a note, if there is anyone still needing to speak to Ashir regarding outstanding or undelivered orders- I see today he has now won Calontir Crown tournament. I imagine he will be much more easily reachable. Also, FWIW, his FB page has been active in posting boots/shoes for sale for the last mo...

Re: IWTB a Mamluk around 1250
Aight. So to beat a dead horse back into life, I wanted to share some of the findings I found about the 13th c. Mamluks. One of the biggest sources was a Hungarian reenactor who set up a website (with references!) about his persona, research, some weapons and garb, and training. There's also anothe...

Any chance we can see a photo of the back side? It looks like you have it strapped much like a heater: diagonally with your elbow near the balance point. I need to finally get one of these built. I think the Romance of Varqa and Gulshah (Seljuq) has one or two images, as does the Shahnameh (Timurid).
There are a couple of others, but don't have access to give better info from work.

Turkish shields (which may have nothing to do with Byzantine shields at all, of course, but might perhaps have been copied from the Byzantines they supplanted) are bowl-shaped and are made by winding a thin cane round and round a central metal boss in a spiral (see here , with adjacent layers of th...

I sand down the shaft to give the stain something to adhere to, seems to work reasonably well...the natural exterior finish of the rattan precludes any good staining.
I like the linseed oil idea...may use that to seal up the stain and see how long it lasts.

Also from ATARN by Adam Karpowicz (well known researcher of Ottoman bows) For the record distances of 930 yards, achieved by Tozkoparan Iskender and Bursali Shuja in the early 1500's, an arrow would have to be shot at close to 400fps. To reach this arrow velocity, the best flight bows (such as the t...
