Re: St. Martin Sleeve on Moselund tunic, = 13th c gamby patt
When I look at this plate in the Maciejowski bible, I am intrigued that there are some pleats above the belt in the "strong quilted surcoats," but not below the belt. ... That suggests to me that you want the expansions to be relatively modest and starting somewhere below the armpit, with some extr...

St. Martin Sleeve on Moselund tunic, = 13th c gamby pattern?
Title basically says it all. Thinking about making a more functional and comfortable gambeson for SCA Heavy, and hopefully making it more plausibly period. St. Martin's Sleeve is carbon dated to 1160 - 1270. There are a few extant tunics with similar slightly inset sleeves. Moselund seems like a goo...

Just Received my copy today, will try to post a more detailed review in the future. That being said this is now THE book in English on Dô. Just read through this whole thread, and am kinda surprised no one has mentioned Effingham's patterns archived on his website http://www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/katchu.html Prior to making my Japanese kit, my armoring experience was limited to sewing a gambeson and making minor tweaks to Dark Victo...

For 12th and 13th century, to get the lines and draping to look correct, I think you need to add triangular gores to the sides, going from the bottom hem to where ever the bottom of the arm hole is.

I use one of these propane torches- http://www.harborfreight.com/electric-start-propane-torch-91061.html Cheap. Much greater volume of flow than a normal propane torch. And using one pound cylinders, I get a lot of time out of it for armor work. I keep two cylinders around and swap them as the one ...

Started working on the pattern for a Norman spangenhelm today. Debating whether to put a grill on it, or a shovelface or something similar. -Badger- This is actually more of what I meant. In the current market, I think most new fighters would be discouraged from using a flat-top barrell at their lo...

Another idea I thought of the other day was talking to Master Cet and seeing about buying backpoint helm halves to make grilled face bascinets, or round tops for single band spangens or shovel face crusaders. He mentions in a facebook post that he still offers quantity discounts for 5 items or more...

I had a question about the scraps. Is there temperature at which you can melt all the scraps together to form new sheets? Check the YouTube vids I linked above, I believe temp is discussed. Quliting has been done, and I've pretty much sussed out how I want the plates to work. Here is the layout for the back: back.jpg and for the front: front.jpg most of the plates came from the lids of barrels used on my japanese armor, so have an acceptable curve already. They will be laced vertically...

Apologies, I've been negligent in updating. I have made some progress, and have made some alterations in the original plan. Found some linen/cotton blend that is a little heavier in the fabric hoard, and I like the color better, so the shell will now be "fustian". The batting is a 100% wool blanket,...

Have you read Tasha Kelly's article on the pourpoint of Charles VI ? With at least five layers of cloth and cotton wool packed into a solid mass an inch thick over the bony parts, you might not need to reinforce it at all! The approach which the pourpontier used is not how reenactors often make stu...

Re: Standalone gambeson, ala Mac Bible and Konstanin?
Next question is how to engineer those consarn pockets into place? I'd figure on building the entire pocket layer separately and laying the rest of the gambeson atop that layer, as a shell garment, primarily attaching about the outer layer's edges and its seams. The pocket layer can of course have ...
