How about joining a Yahoo-group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rivetedmaille/
You need to join the club to see all the albums, but I think that it's worth of it.
Kurttupeiko(peikko?); I may still have some semi-finished pliers hanging around somewhere, for what kind of pliers you were looking after ?

It was more like hostility between the Swedes and the Finns (a bit like today, only we don't kill each others any more). There is not much written documents from that time, so it's hard to tell now, what was real and what's not. Some say that the first crusade to Finland by the Swedes was caused by ...

When you look at the overlap closely, you can see that the flattened wire of the ring goes under the wire end in the overlap and the wire end in the overlap does not blend completely with the flattened ring wire; there is a small step (a bit rounded) in the wire end in the overlap, where it meets th...

Hello Steve, It is funny, in how many different mail pieces you can see that 'step' when you learn what to look at. About the rivet setting: The hand pressure is sufficient enough to peen the rivet well. It's all about the tools. With peening pliers made of end nippers you defenetly need to hit with...

None taken, He did say: "Why not just do a search for this subject here and on Arador" On Yahoo-group site there is no need for any search. It's all just about the riveted mail. And there is other mail in the world than just ErikDSchmid-mail, or am I mistaken ? Unfortunately I can't get that journal...

Nicely answered, Justin. I would like to add something too in this point. If you are after the 'Steve-mail', then the only time when you need to hammer something is the flattening stage. Piercing the rivet holes and peening the rivets can be well made with different kind of pliers. I repeat: no hamm...

I have sometimes used an angle grinder with thin (1mm) cutting blade for steel. I have used it for 14GA piano (hard) wire with exellent results: easily over 5000 rings in an hour and almost no sign of wearing in the blade. It leaves a little gag between the ring ends but it is easily fixed with prop...

At the moment it seems (in the light of some skandinavian studies) that punched rings were used as solid rings in every other row in the 'viking' byrnies before year 800. It is possible that they were used even later. Also in every mail byrnies from roman time there was solid punched rings in every o...

I believe that on that period wire was possibly made by cutting thin strips from a piece of metal sheet. Then it was drawn by using a draw-plate. The end of 'wire' was thinned, it was pushed through the first hole and drawn with pliers. Then it was annealed and after that it was drawn through a smal...
