Re: Free preview of my new book on surviving bascinets

In this case i'm going to have to say I PREFER the line drawings, especially in the instances of helmets that have been widely published already. I think we all have a small idea of the insane amount of research done for this series. I've bought a few patterns from talbot & I can say I pretty much t...

Re: Medieval Knights May Have Had PTSD

When they literally won renown and fortune by killing? I'd say it's a rather safe assumption that killing was easier. This may or may not be relevant, but i'll share it; after a brutal knife attack that left me flatlining, I never suffered ptsd. After a crazy stretch of time in which I was left alon...

Re: Stealth Gauntlets I just finished

It looks like the leather is stitched directly to the metal, similar (at least all the little holes) to the edging of a tekko in japanese kote (i could be wrong). Thus the rivets would be directly to the fingers. No hidden plate. Really clever.

Re: Best extant swordmaker?

I haven't been very active in sword collecting for several years so i'm not up to date on who is running with whose money, as I stated multiple times. I own two lutels that are really nice, though. Please note i've differentiated between custom & production repeatedly; I never once grouped lutel wit...

Re: Best extant swordmaker?

Forgot to mention lutel- they're pretty sweet. If I were thinking beater i'd have to go with kris cutlery. I've owned close to a dozen of them. I've got the single handed & the bastard (no fuller) from the hanwei/tinker line & have to say for the price they're my pick. The fittings are horribly unif...

Re: Best extant swordmaker?

Jeff- that's a shame to hear. I'm surprised & disappointed, but it's good info to know. Honestly if I were going to go that route, i'd probably just buy a bare hanwei blade & mount it. I know he doesn't need any more plugs but I once saw a patrick barta sword at a blade show. It looked like it belon...

Re: Best extant swordmaker?

Jeff could you possibly be getting tinker & atrim confused in regards to the ordering caveat? I admittedly haven't been very involved in the sword community for a few years, but last I heard tinker is one of the most "available" guys in the biz, & has a pretty big forum presence, wheras I know mr. t...

Re: Best extant swordmaker?

Rick barrett is another great smith. When I finally went for a howard clark blade I went with 1086m. The l6 is a neat concept, but the performance difference is waaay beyond anything likely to come up even in the harshest conditions. I would have (before selling it lol) trusted the 1086m even in ins...

Re: Best extant swordmaker?

Tinker does his own stuff using a hydraulic press & stock removal, to my knowledge. He & mr. trim are good friends with similar designs/ performance goals, but that's the extent of their co-operation, as far as I know. Sidenote- both the hanwei tinker line & valiant atrim line are pretty great for t...

Re: Best extant swordmaker?

There's also tinker pearce & kevin cashen. There are a decent handfull of great smiths. i've mostly done japanese style customs so that's an entirely different group of smiths, although I do have a blade from john lundemo & will promote him at any chance. As far as badger blades, well, they fill a c...

I read on wiki martin scorsese is rumored to be working on an adaptation of "the last duel"... He's one of the few directors who i've heard is beyond anal in regards to historical accuracy. Who knows, maybe we'll be seeing an amazing film taking place in the later 14th century!

Re: Okegawa dou take two, with less flatness (Progress pics)

1. Do you mean the munaita & watagami? From what i've seen they were generally only left flat on older suits & suits emulating older ones. So with a haramaki, sure. I'd say with yours there should be some dishing, flair or flair & roll the edges at the minimum.

Re: 15th/16th century plate armours effectiveness against ar

Actually the only example you listed was agincourt, which i've read about enough to get both sides of the arguement. "15th century accounts" doesn't narrow it down or give a place to start. I'm not being arguementative here; i've just never seen said documents. Edit to add; the specific example of f...

Can anybody cite specific examples of arrows penetrating plate? Not just anecdotal "it happened at agincourt." Thanks in advance, this is a good read.

Re: Review: Armstreet Hourglass Gauntlets

I actually meant, I felt the reviewed pair has too sca-ish of fingers to me, not that they lack those features. I think custom fitting is a dealmaker for a lot of people. Buying a pair & having to fiddle with them cuts some buyers out. Not saying I agree with that sentiment (i personally have no int...

I was going to say my only real nit with the armstreet pair is it needs the knuckle rider... I won't/can't address things like enclosed thumbs or grounding fingers, etc. not personally being involved with the sca.

Custom fit does go a long way...

There's nothing wrong with cold steel. I've owned several swords from them and always been pleased. They really are tough. Of course, dynasty forge allegedly uses the same foundry, or at least an affiliated foundry. Hanwei still has ridiculously straight handles, but i've, again, always been pleased...

that's probably the first modern muscle cuirass i've seen that looks like they should... while i do understand it's a lot easier to just pound out some bubble muscles, it never ceases to amaze me the lack of attention to basic anatomy i see. cheap repros have become the paradigm.
