Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
All of my stuff is hanging off of a base web server that serves up real pages. HTML, and JPG. Straightforward, honest, basic web the way it was originally intended. Wade At the risk of derailing this thread further, I thank you for that. It's really the only way you have any control. I appreciate y...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
I feel frustrated and disempowered. Welcome to "The Cloud". It's going to get worse before people figure out what a bad idea giving a giant, unresponsive, and uncaring corporation total control of your data is. The only chance you have for stability and control is rolling your own web server, as on...

Re: 14th C arms in progress
Thank you! I did heat treat, polish and strap these. I was originally pretty sure they wouldn't fit me but as it turned out, they do fit so yay! My heat treat setup is crude, an old kiln lid and some firebrick with a weedburner for heat. Quenched in near boiling water and tempered at 400F for 45 min...

Re: Impressive set of metalworking tools on Craigslist-India
Anybody want to ballpark guess what the whole lot would be worth? I would like a few of the stakes and the plate. One of the smaller anvils too. Group buy? If this gets serious I can probably go get better photos.

Re: 14th C arms in progress
You're welcome. Just be sure to note the lames are an example of how not to do it! I think I'll skip the fan indent on this pair.

Re: 14th C arms in progress
This update took longer than I would have liked. Made a good bit of progress lately. Aside from a couple of fit tweaks and putting a roll on the vambrace, they're ready for heat treating. Nobody noticed apparently, but I put the articulation rivets too far into the fan. That made for asymmetrical la...

Re: Let's talk about templates.
In all honesty, as non-metal pusher, I would pay for a video class just demonstrating a couple of things, and the patterns to make those things, especially if there was some way to contact the teacher and ask questions. A/k/a Metal Shop class -- such as may be found in community colleges pretty muc...

Re: 14th C arms in progress
Zach and Wade, thank you very much. I now have a much greater understanding of what I need to do in the future. I missed Mac's thread somehow. I made my lames "scalloped" just because I had seen that elsewhere. I noticed that it made fitting the lame much easier, but I didn't know why, exactly. Oh, ...

Re: 14th C arms in progress
ManOnFire68: Thank you and no, other than drawing the patterns I have not. Would have been a good idea but it is hard to get a tracing of yourself by yourself. As a consequence, this set is going to end up too small for me to wear. I didn't make the meaty part of the vambrace large enough in diamete...

Re: Let's talk about templates.
Signo, I fully appreciate what you're saying. But I didn't understand the shapes I wanted to achieve on my first project since I had never done that before. I had a set of flat patterns and a picture from a single view of what it was supposed to look like completed. I was forced to look at pictures ...

Re: Let's talk about templates.
Patterns, for me as a rank newbie, were indispensable for my first project. They got me in the ballpark. Even though what I ended up with was 78 different kinds of wrong, it gave me something physical I could touch and view from any angle. I could analyse what I did wrong by comparing it with photos...

Re: Pennsic Woods battle cancelled
In the midst of the muck and mire on middle Sunday, I watched some poor guy in a Mustang GT head out towards the parking lot.. he very nearly sank it in the sludge in front of the North Gate.. some vehicles should not go to Pennsic. Dark gray? That might have been me. If so, it wasn't as bad as it ...

Re: What's everyone using to grind awkward shapes?
Well hell, you just made my week, good sir, and in more ways than one. I also have a couple DC treadmill motors I want to speed control, and at 15A DC this will do it. All I need to worry about now is a 90v PSU. Now I'm one step closer to a 1.25HP belt grinder. I owe you a beer! Harbor Fright stuff...

Re: What's everyone using to grind awkward shapes?
The biggest problem with this thing is that it it rotates at a ridiculous 30,000 rpm! . With a 120 grit disc on it, it very easily leaves grooves where the side of the disc hits the metal. So now I need to go find out whether there's a readily available light dimmer switch or similar that will hand...

Rio Grande sells a superior rubber but it is expensive. For 40 or so casts, Mold Max works fine.

Re: LF challenge coins to be made
It is fairly easy to make your own in pewter. Laser print your design in black and white, mirror imaged, onto paper coated with water-soluble glue. Dextrin works best but PVA works too. Put the paper toner side down onto some thin brass sheet and fuse the toner to it using a document laminator. Soak...

Re: Churburg Arms from Talbot Pattern
Is the elbow cop welded? Dished, but they're not deep enough. A knowledgeable gentleman from the archive pointed that out and a lot of other errors I made. Who do you use for your heat treat? I haven't sent them out yet but was planning to use: http://circlecityheattreating.com/ They quoted $100 bu...

Leonardus, Thanks for the reply. What I take away from your comments is that you are addressing a hypothetical rule change. What I (we) are looking for is a way to actually enforce the rules that already exist on the books. We aren't lobbying for any additional rules, we just want to see folks foll...

Thomas, I'm OK with smartassed snarking, it's entertaining. Do what you feel. :) if the wrastlin guy won't take a hint then I think we just have to put up with it. As I see it, there are two ways to handle authenticity issues. The current laid back approach, which admittedly doesn't work all that we...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?
With all this talk about legistlating appearance and authenticity standards in the SCA I'd just like to say that one of the things I find endearing about the SCA is it's uncomplicated ruleset. Garb? Couldn't be simpler, make an honest attempt. Armoured Combat? Those rules boil down to don't hurt any...
