Re: Safety... meh

So, what would the standard safety kit be at such a HEMA event? Traditionally, standard fencing kit and the best lacrosse gloves one could get pretty much summed it up. There were a few special vendors building semi- (or completely) custom work, such as Tindall Masks http://www.thatguysproducts.com...

Re: Safety... meh

Did a steel tournament this weekend (Longpoint), and hands were target (though not a high-value one by the rule set). Thrusts were legal, as was grappling, and no one was hurt, even though the swords were pretty serious and the required safety gear was absurdly light by BOTN or even SCA standards. ...

? Which of them can you do without? We get broken hands all the time. Most of us just ignore it and keep going. Seriously. I noticed a bony protrusion on my left index finger a couple of weeks back, because I gripped something and pressed against it in a painful fashion. There's a bonespur that pro...

Re: Brass Frog Assault of Arms - New England Rapier and Sabr

I am so bummed out I can't make this. I grew up in the town next door, and one of my childhood friend's husband is one of the people running it. Sigh. It's, unfortunately, a 500 mile drive. :P Hopefully they'll do something in the summer, when I can make a week of it. Longpoint is doing Sabre in MD...

Thinking of attending this puppy so I can hang with Christoph; Therion said he'd be doing some messer here. Unlike the European guys, US HEMA seems basically 100% medieval, but if anybody ever wants to do a sabre tourney, I'd be thrilled... Longpoint is running a Sabre Tournament later in the summe...

Thanks very much for pointing out her school BTW! Her primary research focus is Ringen, but at Longpoint this yea...

I'll giver her a call. We do, however, exchange ideas with various neopagan and ceremonial magic organizations a...

I am interested in taking some longsword classes, but VA academy of fencing in Springfield may as well be on the dark side of the moon from Reston. Any ideas? Springfield isn't THAT bad. Usually. I was always led to believe blocking with the flat was the one and only proper way to block with a blade but that blocking at all with a blade should be avoided if at all possible. the Lichtenauers is fine, but the Epee de Guerre resembles more of that of a Hand and Half sword, which is what my XIIIa Steward is, that and I find the sharp taper in the Lichtenauer's blade to be unattractive, call it a personal distaste, however the Epee doesn't taper near as sharply, though it ...

The thing is, if anyone has a practice of anything (SCA, WMA, etc) at their homes, or even some of the more dangerous arts (armoring, soap making, cooking) they should at least have an umbrella policy in place, whether its an 'officially recognized event' or not, and if it is not an officially reco...
