Re: Am I late to this party? FECHTSCHULE GDAŃSK
Makes perfect sense to me. Personally, I disagree with the Olympic fencing/rapier analogy, because Olympic fencing has developed to the point that it doesn't really pay heed to the original intentions behind the sport. I think a more apt comparison might be between Sambo and military combatives - it...

Re: Am I late to this party? FECHTSCHULE GDAŃSK
personally, I wasnt particularly impressed by the vids. there's a lot of actions to turn the blade, but it feels somewhat superflous, and mostly showy, in my opinion. they're competent, but they dont excel. a lot of it seemed (to my eye) to be a little bit lacking in accuracy. there's a certain ele...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
There's nothing stopping anyone from doing it at an SCA event. Put on armor with a perf-plate face, pick up a couple of Hanwei 4th Gen Practical Longswords and go at it. Calibration? Whatever the participants are happy with. I had a long, gonzo reply written about how, if SCA folks are interested i...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
To put it the other way around - if the aims of the SCA (or SCA as a legal entity), don't represent what you want to do, are fundamentally opposed to some of the viewpoints its members hold, and are dishonest for doing that, why don't you set up your own organisation? Especially if there's a growing...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
On the other hand, if 200,000 cowboy furries bought SCA memberships and lobbied for "fur only" shooting events to become Pennsic warpoints... well, they ARE the majority... Then there would be a perfectly reasonable argument that those 200,000 cowboy furries were lobbying for an activity ...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Oh, apparently I can't edit posts here. But I just figured it was worth pointing out that the stated aims of the SCA as an organisation seem pretty important, because they're bound up in it having a tax-exempt status as an educational organisation. That's a pretty major issue, because without it the...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Not having been a member of the SCA, I'm probably wrong about some things. But as a rough outline am I right in thinking that: The Society for Creative Anachronism is an organisation and legal entity. The aims of the SCA as stated on its website are relatively similar to other organisations that are...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Just don't take the squawkings of localized people as speaking for the entire SCA, please? It varies WIDELY from place to place. Don't worry about it. In the nicest possible way, it was pretty unlikely that I'd join the SCA anyway, just because of geography. There are a bunch of HEMA groups, goodne...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Thanks Aaron. I hope reviving this thread did its job, and got you your giggles. I also hope that if some new people who were lurking and interested in the SCA either didnt read this thread or take it with a grain of salt. Future of SCA Fighting? Show this to a new guy and see how long he sticks ar...
