Hood Construction, Circa 1200
So I've been looking at hoods in the Maciejowski Bible, this one in particular... http://pinterest.com/pin/491666484293051129/?s=3&m=messaging And wondered which way they were making hoods at this point. 2 shaped halves sewn together, or a rectangle and two square gussets.... Re: Questions about Gambesons, Circa 1200
I think I've got a pretty good game plan laid out for how I'm going to make my gambeson. One site suggested adding 3 inches of seam allowance to make up for the space it will take to quilt and stuff it. Does that sound about right?

Re: Questions about Gambesons, Circa 1200
So after looking at web pages, via Google, I'm confused as to whether a gambeson is several layers of cloth, quilted together,or just two layers quilted together, with padding/batting/filler stuffed down the "tubes" made when quilting the topside to the lining vertically. What way is best?

Questions about Gambesons, Circa 1200
I've been looking at the gambesons in the Maciejowski Bible so that I can try my hand at making one for my persona. I've made a few observations that have raised a couple of questions... Ive noticed that there's quite a variety of them. They are all long like the tunics as opposed to shorter like th...

Also, one of those coif caps, and a square blanket pinned around you for a cape will be good finishing touches.

The Maciejowski Bible is the best resource. Wow... ok... so I guess I'll be "that guy"... LEDs, Coleman Lanterns, tiki torches??? How about researching what a "period" oil lamp would look like for your persona, and then crafting one? (Also, you can't go wrong with candles) ...and then practicing common sense fire safety. Aren't we supposed to...

Re: Arming and clothing a European pirate late 14th century?
Like sailors from any other time period, they dress in plain working class clothes. Tell your friend to also learn something about knots and splicing and terminology. Sailors are a different breed and tend to stand apart in their language and mannerisms.

Sound advice, I think! I have been using this stuff called Eco-Flo that's made by Tandy. Hobby Lobby carries it. It was water based and does very well. The only downside is that it only comes in three colors :-/

Thanks everyone!
The leather was a piece of Vegetan. I see what you mean about the oxblood, Ive never had this problem with other colors of dye. I'll buff the wax off, soak it, and buff some more.

Leather Dying Question...
I dyed a piece of leather with Fiebing's Oxblood colored dye. I then put two coats of wax over it. When ever I rub with my hands or a cloth it's still rubbing off a pink color from the dye... any suggestions on how to fix this?

Re: Looking for Arrow Shafts
If you're looking to practice fletching, you could get dowel rods from the hardware store. They should run about $.80 ea. for "hardwood". Where as normal cedar arrow shafts are about $3/ea. I wouldn't shoot the dowels though. I actually might have a dozen cedar shafts that I can part with, but I th...

18th century powder horns were largely burnished after scraping. I used a small stainless steel rod to burnish mine. Re: 2 Ash Longbows
What I mean by it not stacking is that the bow is 50# @ 28 inches, and is proportionally lighter weight at less length as I'm drawing it. It doesn't feel like Im trying to pull 50 # back when I hit 20 inches, its smooth and even.
