Re: Viking/norse sword scabbard

I found some extant stuff in the end. Seemed all the bridge work etc was pretty much metal on them. So I went that way.

Thanks!

Viking/norse sword scabbard

I've been reading about sword scabbards and especially suspension for Norse scabbards. I've seen this style a fair bit: http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/082/d/f/viking_sword_scabbard_21_by_darksuntattoo-d3c9u69.jpg Is this a period style or something someone made up and has been used for the c...

If I had wanted a period solution vs a periodish solution I would have posted in Historical Research.

However since that wasn't my goal, so I posted here.

Re: Camp torches. Citronella. Alternatives?

OK. So lots of posts about holders and supplying your own bottles, or using glass etc.

Is everyone just using glass? Or are you using a generic tiki canister?

Are you using something else custom to hold the fuel?

The torches we run serve two purposes light and keeping the bugs down.

Camp torches. Citronella. Alternatives?

What does everyone use around their camp for torches to burn things like citronella?

We have a couple of non-descript tiki-torch style, but would like more.

Easy to re-fill and robust for transport would be ideal.

Either inexpensive or simple to build would be best.

Ideas?

Re: Camp seating. Benches. Breakdown.

That paticular bench can be modified by adding hinges and carriage bolts/wind nuts to break down flat. there are a few benches that can be built as mini tressels fairly easy. If you have time and any skill with a draw knife/spoke shave benches are fairly quick and easy. Splayed leg benches can also...

Camp seating. Benches. Breakdown.

I have seen benches in norse encampments here and there that looked pretty good, no clue on their periodness at the time, but didn't scream out of place. I would love to add something less modern than the folding bright red/purple/blue nylon camp chairs. The benches I had seen would seem to fit the ...

Thanks for the replys.

My angle was to avoid cutting out the letters and to avoid getting a cri-cut type machine :)

The vinyl is good info.

In the end I didn't do the etching.

Thanks everyone.

Re: If folks wouldn't mind providing some feedback...

My greatest weakness is lack of observation of the fight as a whole. I fail in being able to observe my opponent and end up concentrating too fully on my offense.

Either just in general, or in a tunnel vision sort of way. I WILL HIT THAT TARGET.

Re: Etching. The resist. Stickers?

Stickers will give me the opposite of what I want though. I want the letters to be what is being etched, not what is around them.

I am not keen on a heat transfer for this, it doesn't produce a strong enough resist for my project.

Etching. The resist. Stickers?

Has anyone ever tried the following.

Layout stickers.
Paint over stickers.
Let dry
Remove stickers

If so any thoughts on it as a process?

I had some issues dealing with Blockade Runner. I would not personally use them again. My tent is from them and it is fine, but I after that ordered a sleeve from them to build a ridge pole. I think they use a very generic lamellar plate... "They beat out in large numbers thin iron plates a finger broad and a full hand long. In each they bore eight small holes, through which they pull three straight leather thongs. Thereupon they arrange these plates one above the other, as it were, des...

I have nothing to add here apart from agreement. Metal lamellar. Yes. Plenty of evidence for it. Plenty of paintings. The description on it from Carpini quotes above. I'm sure I can dig up extant or close to extant samples if I needed to. Feel free to ask them to produce documentation on leather lam...

finishing of blades.

Looking for books and articles detailing the finishing of forged blades in period. Especially the thirteenth century. Found references to filing, but was curious if there was techniques that were essentially replaced with sand paper and polishing compounds.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Soapstone Pewter Casting

I could add more vents. I might do that. Currently the pewter enters the top fills straight down and a little out to the sides and then solidifies.

I have done repeated casting attempts with the mold, so it has gotten to the very warm stage/I can't really hold it anymore.
