Re: Hardening question

Plenty of good info above, but surprised no one mentioned....... If you're after a steel for armouring, 1050 is a good product. (Many have success with 4130, but I have no experience with that so can only speak on 1050) From admiral or precision, it is typically supplied in "annealed", that is in fu...

Re: 16th Century German Voiders and Arming Coat

I saw this piece at least 10 years ago. It was up in the storage room on the 4th (?) floor of the museum, above the offices. At that time the room was used to store all the pieces of dubious provenance or pieces that were known as "non-authentic". (I hesitate to use the word "fake")...and the other ...

Re: difference between 1074 and 4130?

Grettir, you mention mig welding, but I couldn't tell if you were referring to mig-welding 1050. I've tried finding 1050 mig wire, but with no success. Do you know if there is such a thing, and if so, where would I find it? I'd love to get a mig welder for 1050, but the wire has been the issue. Any ...

Re: How a Man Shall Be Armed, a Video Essay of the 14c Harne

Looking at the way a 15th century arming doublet is fit and knowing what its function is, the gap shown in Jeff's arming doublet above is clearly not a fashion thing but a function thing to achieve the tight fit required to girdle the hips for the sake of suspending a leg harness. Thus the slight g...

1. It is certain that some sort of adhesive is used to attach the outer layer of leather. Try as you might, you will not find any stitching on the outside, nor any traces of where stitching might have been "buried" in the leather. This is consistent with what Olaf Goubitz said about etuis in his "P...

Re: Cuir bouili, French style

Hey Mac, I guess one question to ask perhaps, though rather late in the game, is...is it really necessary to use a "glue" at all to form the leather? Does the gelatin/glue add appreciable stiffness to the finished case, and is additional stiffness over what would be obtained by normal "casing" (ie s...

Hey Mac, The French guy's application for this technique seems to be solely for molded leather cases with telescoping lids. As I understand it, cases such as these wouldn't need to be the same hardness as that of armour. Is that also your understanding, or do you see this technique suitable for maki...

Re: 1480's Italianate Left Arm Harness: Help!

I've made a lot of these and joust with a left vambrace of this type. The pin should be removable, otherwise there's no way to get the guardbrace over the pin if the fit on the underlying elbow is good, because the guardbrace "hooks" partially over the back of the elbow cop. You place the guardbrace...

I've attended Pennsic for over 20 years, and indeed, as Mike E suggests, ran my KnightSchool at a nearby -private- farm for folks from around the eastern states. Mike was one of them. The sessions were done at the farm for a very good reason, because having horses at Pennsic wasn't even remotely pos...

Re: FOR SALE – REPRODUCTION MILANESE HARNESS (c.1450)

Just fyi, the practice harness that student ordered was a very simple "starter" armour he wanted in time for a gig in early October; it is much simpler than Will's armour and I suggested he use it for practice so he could minimize wear on the blackening on Will's.

1. Wear greaves, if you aren't already. If you have plate cuisses, you should be. 2. Use more than one point---two or even three is good. A single point is certainly not enough and will be very prone to tearing out the eyelet in your arming garment. --One point front and center, one directly on the ...

Re: how come the back of the thighs wernt protected on knigh

Never forget that knights, by definition, are horsemen. It is hard to hit a knight's innter thighs through his horse. It is also darned uncomfortable to wear fully enclosed legs when in a saddle. As stated above, there are some specific foot combat harnesses with back of thigh protection. True dat....

I would hazard that since Doug's piece is -so- fragmentary, we shouldn't jump to conclusions about this one. I don't think we can even date the thing conclusively. There's simply not enough of it there to base a solid dating. Could be 14th c, could be 16th c. or anything in between. Based on my rese...

When it's cast directly off someone else's piece, it's a knock off, which I know it is, because this buckle didn't appear until after I started selling mine. If they create their own model, then they can do it no problem. This habit of re-casting others' work is typical of pakistani and indian manuf...

Warning to sellers of buckles and other cast metal items

It's come to our attention that a seller on eBay is selling a knock off of one of our buckles. This is not a new thing, nor do we believe it can be stopped all at once, but part of our responsibility as a business creating our own design interpretations is protecting those interpretations by enforci...
