Most of the joust horses used at the New York Ren faire are former poloponies. They're quick, agile and already trained to deal with noises, lots of swirling action and running at other animals. I dig Morgans as well. Good solid horse. You can ride, show, jump, drive, trail... pretty much anything a...

Saex question

What was the traditional scandinavian way of wearing the saex?

Blade up? Down? Scabbard on straps or shoved thru the belt?

I have a sheath project and am looking for info, thanks for the help.

Re: Viking Halberd

First regrading structure. the weakness of the blade at the juncture of socket and blade is entirely dependent on how well it is tempered. My point was the torque applied by the socket to the wood and the wooden shaft breaking rather than the steel breaking. Again I bring up the bardiche which is c...

Not to throw more fuel on the fire, but isn't this just a poor design from a physics standpoint? One good hit to the blade behind the pivot point attaching the blade to the haft would snap the wood it seems. Hence the rear blade brace on a bardiche. The norse from what I have read and seen were effi...

As a Fantasy armourer (almost solely) I find it nigh impossible to create pieces that do not fucntion correctly. If you cannot swing a weapon or move in the piece it is pointless. #2 is usually just what it means, not as clean as #1s. Some tanneries use Grade A, B, etc. Personally I like the B & C grade leathers. They have some scars and a brand or two, but these can look really cool once dyed and antiqued. They are usually less money too... I use Siegel of California for mos...

In the begining, I actually cut them with rubbing alcohol, with acceptable results... But about 4 years ago I found that Fiebing's has a Thinning Agent that comes in quarts just like the dyes.

What do you use to apply your dyes? I use trimmed sheep skin.

I use Fiebing's dyes, and green and blue are the hardest colors to get a nice even dye coat. I usually thin the dye 1/1 or 1/2 (dye to thinner) and put several nice wet coat, to get a nice even forest green. Otherwise green dyes very blotchy as the dye dries very quickly. I will then use medium brow...

Most white dyes are 'surface dyes', which means they won't penetrate the leather like other dyes... And will crack at first stress.

In period I believe they used gesso, egg whites and some other stuff...
