100% silk is hard to find, it however looks really different than cotton, poly, or rayon velvet.

Most of us are using the wrong tanning for our thong sword belts, evidence is strong that the leather was alum-tawed and not tanned; which is why it was white.

There are some buckles in effigies before 1300 in Germany but mostly ties, but I see a flip to more buckles around 1300

You see these in early 14th century art. Belt buckles become the norm by the 1330s in art.

Not in this case it rests on my chin. Much like how gauntlets are not going to stop an ax I would rather have the item as is than not at all.

It fits tight so no where for it to go. To come off the helmet must be removed first which also has no strapping.

Pressure, it is too large to be pulled through the face of the helmet. You have to squeeze it to slip it up into the helmet(s).

I can tell you the one you are showing from the Peel Affinity is free floating, because I am in current possession of it. Its based on the looting scene in the St. Denis Bible from 1410 or so

Hey John, if you look at late Roman era stuff you will find strong horse riding cultures wore leggings with kaftans often especially Germans and Eastern Empire folks. Lots of 6th and 7th century finds for them.

What is the date when the effigy was actually made. It might be produced years after the death and have elements of old tech with current at that time tech together.

What about silk fabric? Silk and wool are far more commonly used by knights in the 14th century than velvet.
As to the look maybe it's just me but artificial decor fabrics and fake velvet come off far more cheap looking than a real wool or silk garment.

Is the double strap the girdle or the points in the translation above. If the girdle there are examples in the Anglo Saxon York leather book as well and the MOL Dress Accessories book. Mostly a nice leather thinner wrapped over a thicker leather core and the over layer is stitched in the center back...

Jon what do you mean by welts here. You mean where they have the doubled over thickness sticking out between the seems? I have not seen that on medieval men's purses though I think there might be examples for some of the 16th century bag purses, I will have to consult some art and PiP.

I have seen experiments with coating in glue. It was in French and I used google translate to read it, basically brushed liquified fish glue onto the leather.
