A little off topic, but Sinric, it looks like the top of your head has been chopped off!

*Grin*

To that I say:

She may be one of my favorite authors, but I don't think she knew all of her history.

Besides, what about the Celts? Their women fought, that much is known. Boudicca is a great example of that. ;-)

Not to mention that owning a horse can be an expensive lifestyle. However, it does have its rewards, and the bond that develops between horse and rider can be strong and last for many, many years. I've been fortunate to have one of the best friends I've ever had be a part of my life for the past 20 ...

Perhaps it's an Ansteorra 'thing', but combat archers (in my experience, and those I have fought alongside) have always dressed appropriately for being on the field of battle - well with SCA guidelines for heavy weapons combat. <I> From the COMPLETE PARTICIPANT’S HANDBOOK – KINGDOM OF ANSTEORRA ...

My original question regarding wood bolts and arrows being no longer acceptable pertains to combat archery...I apologize for not clarifying that sooner. As for combat archers being allowed on the field of battle, I believe that they should - not just because I am a combat archer, but because they we...

My big reason for using wood is that I still have a good 40+ wooden bolts left over from my active SCA days, and I'd hate to shell out a bunch of money for more bolts right now. I suppose I can get started on some fiberglass ones (I figured they'd be the better choice) soon, but until then, I'll jus...

So, wood arrows and bolts are NO longer acceptable?

(title was supposed to say, "So, are wood arrows and bolts no longer acceptable?"..) I've looked at a few websites with the new 'rules and regulations' regarding archery in the SCA, and there is no mention (at least, not that I can find) of wood being an acceptable material. Golf tube bolts are S-L-...

I for one, must admit that I once thought that sewing loops for buttons would be 'quick and easy' - faster than individual buttonholes.

Now that I've done both, I have to agree that buttonholes are the better choice.

AFAIK, the bodkin was specially designed to open/cut chainmail, and could do so with a relatively 'light' bow - say 45lbs. I have a few of them lying around (I never quite found a use for them, other than enjoying the way they look? ) I'm not absolutely positive how long they've been around, but I'm...

I think part of it may also be that, "Well, it's MINE (or will be) and no one is going to get it!" I find that happening all the time when I go looking for something - people seem to almost enjoy battling it out with one another over an item when there's another just like it with no bids at all. I r...

Yes, salt-glazing will ruin a kiln.. Once you've salt-glazed in a kiln (can't do it in an electric kiln), the salt forms a coating over the interior of the kiln, pretty much forcing you to use it strictly for salt-glazing. I managed to pick up an old, small Paragon kiln for the price of hauling it a...

Thanks for your quick reply, Edric! I've looked their site several times, and even thought about buying an item or two to see if they're stoneware or earthenware. Since you have two of their jugs and one of their pitchers, perhaps you can answer my question - Do you know if they're stoneware or eart...

How do YOU feel about feast gear?

Just a question, because I'm a potter, and I'm trying to get a feel for what folks out there might like to have for their feast gear..assuming that it's something someone would want. I can do just about anything (well, not HUGE pieces) from plates, saucers, cups, mugs, goblets, tankards, bowls...you...

Yeah, good question Brodir!

Exactly WHAT is legal nowadays? I heard a rumor that wooden bolts and arrows are no longer combat legal, but I think that's probably just an ugly rumor (hoping, fingers crossed)..

I haven't shot anyone in a while, so all of my bolts and arrows aren't up to current specs.

One can often pick them up fairy cheaply off eBay, too...even cedar shafts are readily available. Fletching jigs are also a regular item, as well as feather or plastic fletches. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can find them on Ubid.com, too, and they're very cheap. Now, if I can just find an afforda...

Exactly! And ya never know just what size you'll* end up when you're through bfeeding, too. For years I wore a quilted jack with plexiglass scales sewn on the inside for protection. Worked pretty well, I must say. Can't imagine fighting while bfeeding, though. It's just one of those things - I'd hat...
