Re: Single Most Painful Shot given/Received By You?

Sir Thomas of Calais, on several occasions, has delivered a shot that lands right where my ass and my leg meet. It is the only shot I have ever received that stops my fight right there and then.

Is anyone going to Combat Con this year? It says Battle of Nations on the schedule but I don't know if that is what the American team is still going to do.

Re: Tuchux banned from Pennsic?

THIS RIGHT HERE IS THE REALITY OF IT ALL. 1) I haven't been active around Tuchux for a while BUT I've never seen a Tuchuk do anything I haven't seen a regular SCA fighter do. 2) If it ain't okay, it ain't okay, no matter who does it. My experience has been that the SCA is very much a 'who do you kno...

Re: Why don't Squires exist?

Agreed. Squire to a Knight is an individual contract. Sometimes those contracts break and sometimes when that happens it can be messy, but stays personal. I have seen a few Knight/Squire breakups and they are always downplayed. Last thing anyone would want to see is an announcement in a Kingdom news...

Re: And he threw a rising flat snap into his opponent's

Squire's Tourney in 2006; I had spent the past three months setting up proceedures and training for a big government contract. My first opponent had a pole arm against my sword and shield. In quick succession I struck his left leg, hip and arm. As he was going to his knees I wound up and struck him ...

Two sword help (not rapier)

So I am teaching escrima at my Dojang and I have been looking over various sources to augment what I am teaching. YouTube is just about useless as most of the videos involve katas (which is not our focus), focuses on what I already know, or is just plain bad. Oddly enough some of the best exercises ...

Re: What 'weapon' could be used as half-sword

What I did for a tourney years ago, was to make two matching pole arms designed to look like great swords. The hilt was made from hard foam and had padding on each end. The sword tip and pommel both had thrusting tips on them. Most everyone fought with them using the proper technique, only one perso...

The one thing the show neve seems to address is where you can get the cool sunglasses that Rod wears.

Re: Full Metal Jousting

Aside from that, this last episode shows how crap the equipment is. Three nut-shots in one episode? Didn't these people even look at period saddles? Wow! Maybe the painted garbage can armour isn't really appropriate for a full contact, full speed activity? If it wasn't for the major coolness of the...

I felt Mike had a number of things going against him in the show. I was glad to know he was not sent home after his first joust. But I recall that he was participating in practices with the rest of them for just such an occasion. The first nut shot was bad, but when the second jouster is riding away...

Honestly the actions on Full Metal Jousting should not constitute an R&D by the SCA. I also side with Mearyk in that too often people have a knee jerk reaction to call for the removal of someone from the SCA.

Re: Full Metal Jousting

Rope did ask for Praetorian (which is my favorite horse BTW). When Praetorian started to get jumpy during training, they switched to Superman, but the joust Rope was back on Praetorian. From one of the early episodes my impression is that if the rider gets keyed up the horse will react to it. Now wa...

Concerning the horse punch, before the episode I was thinking it would be something along the lines of while they were on the horses. I was not expecting what I saw, and had to watch it twice just because the first time around it didn't compute. I was more disgusted with the jousters reaction that h...

The time, cost and energy in getting one side to wear the same heraldry is just beyond the capacity of the SCA. There is nothing wrong with the tape identification and at least the decals are heraldic in design. (Although one year I stuck one of those damn Apple stickers on the side of a fellow squi...

Re: Full Metal Jousting

The second episode joust was a big surprise. I had thought that dinner theater jousting would be a solid ground for Jack but I guess he would not have been knocked out of his horse at all if he was not previously trained to lean back like that. When Jack knocked himself off of his horse after hittin...
