Medieval armor, tactics, blood and gore

Anyone have any favorite on-line accounts of medieval combat, armor, tactics, and blood and gore?

I'm looking for actual medieval accounts.

Need pics of high quality artifacts from a LH group

I'm doing a presentation on re-creation and re-enactment and would like links to pics of really good stuff produced by members of a LH (not SCA) group(s)

Histoire de Guillaume le Mareschal

The Anglo-Norman Text Society in England has published an English translation of the History of WM -- the first one. I have vol 1, which takes the story up to the point that Richard I became king. As one of thousands who has only read the History as summarized in modern books, I have to say -- IT'S ...

Wait, such a thing could NEVER happen in the Midrealm, Land of Determinent Marshalling, could it? I've been in the SCA since 1970 and never heard of a fighting related suit. That doesn't mean there haven't been any. But more common, I believe, are suits that are based in political disagreements. I was among the targets of one such.

Alcyoneus, I don't know what he means by "last duel," for sure, but I do know that there was an elaborate legal preliminary for the use of a judicial duel in France, at least in the "civilian" sphere. Such a procedure left a big documentary trail. OTOH, duels under the law of arms, in a military sit...

Eric Jager on "The Last Duel"

A recent book "The Last Duel" concerns a judicial duel in France 1386. There's a substantial NPR interview on the web at: m I've written a little on the same incident in the upcoming "Deeds of Arms." I was impressed by the author in the interview, though I'm not as sure as he is that this was the la...

I gave up wraps as a standard technique quite a while ago.

A couple of years ago I pulled a very neat shot (not a wrap) against a superior opponent and damaged my sword shoulder, which has never been the same since.

I'm in my 50s and so caution makes sense to me.

The biggest risk in SCA fighting is taking part in huge melees at major wars. Even in that case damage to the limbs, especially sprains and dislocations, are the most likely problems. In normal tournament/small melee fighting injuries are quite rare. Long-term wear and tear esp. on joints -- yes. Bu...

Gaston, I agree that counted blows received is a lot better than what we do now. However, it doesn't, as far as I know, meet the demo test, which is when some schoolkid says, "Is that what they did in the Middle Ages?" I have to admit it's been too long since I looked over the 15th century material ...

The difference between a shot to the shin and a shot to the forearm is that your leg is held in place by the weight of your body, and therefore the blow has more impact.

Counted blows received is no more period than what we do now.

Galleron invented it to simulate accumulated damage that might eventually take an armored fighter out.

I like it, but making it the be-all and end-all would be a serious mistake.

I favor allowing a lot of victory conditions. The tricky one is "to submission." Throw this open to everyone and you'll have ugly fights and an ugly backlash. AFAIK in the later 14th century the vast majority of formal combats were judged. Riskier scenarios should have a judge with authority to say ...

I am not enthusiastic about strikes to the shin. I'd say it would only be sensible if those doing it had greaves. It might not be a big issue with good fighters, because as I read Fiore strikes below the waist were rare -- because risky? However, if inexperienced fighters with inadequate equipment w...
