Re: A Use for Dyed Linen

Sean, I am working on this using records from London. I have about a dozen examples of linen being colored, yellow, brown, green, blue and red. I have mostly found finished goods that are linen dyed. Why we don't see it in the pre finished garment or item is something I notices as well. That said I ...

Re: 1480 Gothic Gauntlet progress

I get what you mean. The more one does this and goes at it with a desire to improve there is that pattern of improvement. You pick up things that work better than others as well making things more efficient. I wish we had a more comprehensive work on armour thickness. It's one of the things that we ...

Scott, That is an excellent lesson to teach us. I think sometimes we just get to a project and miss the details like this that might be obvious but perhaps miss for some reason. Those are looking very promising! In fact they get a bit of planishing and grinding and I bet these could be good to go. A bit of modification and such you could make several interesting helmet types.

For sure. I have an strong interest in the gear for the more common soldier. I feel like its something that largely gets lost in the mix so to speak. When I read Capwell's Fighting Stuff book some years ago I thought right away that this was something living history needed more of. Best of luck with...

What an interesting experiment! I think you are right. It could be a bascient still. Look at the first half of the 14th to mid century and you get things rather close. Re: Arbalest à Tillolles

I really believe the two foot version are bigger in scale and size. We actually have a few remaining that are big to insanely big crossbows. IN this case it is logical that they used longer bolts and had a bigger power stroke and possibly heavier bolts. I found evidence of them all the way into the ...

Re: Arbalest à Tillolles

I'm still not sure that one and two foot crossbows actually mean they use one or two feet to span. I suspect you have the lighter ones that you can span with your hand but after that they are all belts until you get to the windlasses and such. I think it has to do with bolt size. I have found severa...

Thank you all for the thoughts on this. Some excellent ideas here. I'm really thinking tradition might be a major feature in this. Mac, This is a very interesting new tool. I might have to try this out. So I know Wade and Josh W. has heard me going on about this...

I'm doing some faulds right now. I've been looking at mid and third quarter of the fifteenth Italian style and it's interesting as so many features of the cuirass are designed so that with minimal deviation the faulds don't sit right. Much of what I have been doing is just staring at photos. I think...

I've looked on MS miniatures and found a number of examples that are useful. I found some European scale gaunts from the 16th. A bit late but interesting.
