Sounds like it's too late for you, but I would definately make the cheek peices in one peice with the bottom half of the helm. Not too much shaping to do in that area, and it will save you the trouble of lining up some fairly critical rivit holes.

I think that you are very ambitious. That is a great thing, but if you judge the result of your work in comparison to the work of the masters that inspire us. . . Well youre being too hard on yourself. When I got frustrated to the point you seem to be at, I pulled out a botched peice (a peaked spang...

Overall it's pretty impressive. Outside of this message board and any university campus, no one would notice the fact that the helm is a couple hundred years removed in history from the rest of it, so as long as it's being represented as a wholly fantasy peice, I like it. I'm interested to know what...

Historically speaking, the mail should be made in a way that will allow the weave to close up when it hangs instead hanging open. If you haven't made any of the difficult seams yet, you should not have too much trouble fixing it.

I would urge you not to do this unless the harness of which you speak is early 14th century. We need to wear the typical rather than the wierd. Just because we can justify an isolated case of something does not mean we should copy it. If you are portraying an early 15th century Irish knight then by...

Permanent or not, zinc poisoning is a nasty experiance. I always mention it to guys who are new to metal working and decide to work with galvinized metal as a favor. I may just use this thread as an excuse to wear a visored sugarloaf with a 14th century harness.
