Killkenny’s Titebond 3 leather hardening?
Hey, all. I’ve been away for quite a few years, but I’m interested in coming back to the SCA. Years ago, I remember Duke Gavin posting about glue hardening leather, as opposed to wax hardening it. I’m very familiar with wax hardening, but I can’t find Kilkenny’s thread. I’ve since friended him on Fa...

Re: Drilling out upholstery tacks
You bought the Roper Whitney XX knockoff that I recommended on Facebook, correct? What diameter of rivets will you be using, 1/8” or 3/16”? Regardless, I would temper the punches and dies in an oven, before I punched anything. Cheap insurance, and it should stop the 1/8” punch breaking on the first ...

Back from the dead! I'm thinking hard about fighting again, and I'm seriously regretting selling these. if whomever I sold them to is still active here, I'd love to buy them back! At the very least, at least the pictures still work!

The heavy duty hand punch with stand for $60 actualy looks decent, its a copy of the XX whitney punch. The whitney version regularly go for $100-120 or so on Ebay used. The 5JR usualy goes for a little less then $45 or so after shipping. http://www.grizzly.com/products/Heavy-Duty-Hand-Punch-w-Stand...

Re: My work, Dragons! (01-26-14)
Thanks Hal! Got the Húrin v2 done today. I scrapped the old face and tried to make a new one but that didn't work either. So no face plate here, just the grill. Overall I'm happy how the helm turned out. This will go to the classifieds once I figure out a proper price tag. How much should I charge?...

Cheapest riveted ones, even with shipping (20.00 bucks to the US IIRC)

Home heat blueing quandry.
So, I have some mild steel arms and legs that I'd like to heat blue, and I mean literally, dark blue. I need 590 degrees to achieve that and the oven only goes to 550, which gets me a purple color. I tried a test piece and let it sit in the hot oven for several hours, and I got a strange color, not ...

Dave Rylak at RFH is the man for this job. He can weld and grind the center seam on a helm top any way you like, ridge, no ridge etc. It looks like his website is down, though. He hasn't updated his Facebook page in a while either. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rough-from-the-Hammer/362237653794369...

Re: Is anyone set up for brass plating?
There is a chance your belt tip is nickel over brass, if that's the case it should be fairly easy to strip acid, DC current, or abrasives. The other common metal used for belt fittings is steel so a magnet should give you an idea on whats beneath the nickel. Well, you were right, nickle over brass....

For shield baskets, I like the ones Bokalo makes. Super light weight and very protective. You do need to drill two holes and add a handle. Item #625A

Re: Is anyone set up for brass plating?
Well, it is slightly magnetic, I wonder if it's just the Chicago screws on the back? I also looked at the back and it looks like it might be brass after all. Would muriatic acid strip the nickel and not hurt the brass underneath? I have a bucket that is 1 part water and 2 parts swimming pool acid.

These appear to be made by Alan Bauldree (who makes armour for icefalcon). Alan's gauntlets offer great protection and range of motion. I like this newer thumb design.

There used to be a post on either here or on the web about a bowling ball dishing hammer. The ball is suspended from the ceiling of the shop on bungee cords and the dishing stump or form was underneath it. I made one, and it worked well. I dismantled mine because I did not use it for a while and it...

Wax hardened leather punches and cuts super easily. For hardening, i use a combination of high heat parrafin, stearic acid and carnuba. Produces super hard armor.
