Thanks a lot gentlemen, that should be more than enough options for me to find some. The trick-tools one looks the best to try first.
Only down side is that I will also order a catalog and you know that is gonna be costly down the road.
Thanks again.

Re: How to make ball stakes round or rounder.
Losthelm, unless it is really thin material, wood or plastic doesn't really have the mass needed. I would think you would waste a lot of energy. Chris, that is a good source, might order me a couple. Sean, I gave a smaller round stake I had a try again and you know what, doesn't work. Dad had it rig...

Re: How to make ball stakes round or rounder.
Ok, tried to check the hardness of one of the balls but it is too big for my tester. :( http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q695/LemeeKnives/stakes1_zpsyarkaodp.jpg Went around the shop and collected all the stakes I have, many in poor condition and needing a cleanup. Especially my dad's mushroom st...

Re: How to make ball stakes round or rounder.
Thanks Wade. I will shape one of them more like a mushroom with different curves as you suggest. Then after using it a bit I'll have a better feel for the shapes needed for different projects. I don't know why I became fixated with a perfectly round stake. I should have known better. My dad u...

I use TIG welding gloves to hold stuff at the buffer. Thin enough so you can hold small parts.

Re: How to make ball stakes round or rounder.
Mac, this is sadly not for armour, more general sculptures. Short story is that I am having problems with the insurance company and can't make or sell knives for the time being. So I am making small sculptures until I can find insurance, something my Dad use to do and that I always wanted to try. I ...

Re: How to make ball stakes round or rounder.
Losthelm, you are right, these are probably not that hard. I will check with the hardness tester. But I plan of shaping mostly soft metals (copper, brass...) for now so it should be ok. Until I find proper hardened balls.

Re: How to make ball stakes round or rounder.
Thanks Keegan, that's a good idea. I do have a small lathe 9" so that might work. Might chuck the ball itself instead of the stake (which is still not welded on yet). Not sure I can center the stake perfectly and I want to keep as much of the ball as possible. In any case you just use the top half o...

How to make ball stakes round or rounder.
I have to make two ball stakes. I have the balls (ok I can't say that without smiling). They were shot-put I think, 2 sizes. The thing is, they are somewhat round but it could be better. Any tricks to this or is eyeballing things with maybe a template is the only way. Wish I had a CNC. :( Any help w...

Re: Latest score: B3 for $95, need rust removal advice.
Sean, google electrolytic rust removal. Not expensive to make a setup for it and it is like magic I tell you. I used it on many old tool restoration projects. It's even addictive, you'll be looking for stuff to derust after you've tried a few pieces. On a side note, I am ashamed to say that I have a...

Re: Show me your..... Belt sanders ( please )
I am not sure I understand. Is the drillpress variable speed? Those are expensive.
You can get a VFD for about 130$ and build a box to keep the dust out like I did and a 2HP 3 phase motor runs about 200$ new. (you could surely find a better price used). Reasonable I think.

I remember seeing one a couple of years ago that Padrig built that had multiple configurations. I saved a couple of pics for inspiration, I hope he doesn't mind me posting them. Not at all, to the contrary I am glad you saved them. It's been taken apart a while ago and replaced with a variable spee...

Wow, thanks a bunch Tom for all that, it really helps. You have even gotten me thinking about other ways to do this. Thanks for the links guys.
Cian, I did find a lot of links on Google, including the 2 you posted but not much on the part of the process that I need more info on, the leather covering.
Tom, thanks for the links. Again, not much about the covering part except from that one link Cian posted.

You surely know this but in case you don't, Uncle AL at riverside has some of the best fixtures around. A little bit higher in price but well worth it.

Yes Konstantin but I never saw profiled blanks sold without the bevels already ground. In any case I am sure Hal will do a great job on them. Re: Seax blade blanks
My wife just ordered me a couple of damascus knife blanks. 12" long by 2" wide by 3/16" thick, cable and triditional. I am going to grind me up a seax and a bowie knife. I have to use the stock removal method as I do not forge. Hal I guess you mean bars Hal cause a blanks would already be profiled....

I have also read that an extent blade was taken to a japanese polisher who did the full polish on it and found a hamon. This of course is only a unsubstantiated conjecture until someone can dig out the source again. But it's more than good enough for me.  Thanks! PS: Pics to follow later...

Hamon on a knife?
I have never seen a hamon on a medieval knife. European that is. Of course we are use to them on Japanese swords. Maybe because the finish didn't show it when it was present.

Proper knife grind
I am working on, well let's call it a medievalesque knife. What would be the correct grind for something around 13-14-15century/table/everyday/utility knife? See why I called it medievalesque.
I guess a flat grind but does I take it all the way to the spine?
