I have objections to using stainless for a seg. 1) they didn't use it 2) it does not act the same as mild steel in the way it hangs and moves 3) if its the wrong alloy and/or not worked correctly it will rebound. Rust? Wax and oil, natural oil, not olive. OR tin plate it. A handful of seg plates hav...

The off the rack segs are NOT suitable for SCA combat

The arm hole is often way to small. Hinges are often half barreled and fail quickly. Some plates are the wrong shape, some segs are older versions of whatever steel was available.

avoid, unless you want to take it apart and rebuild to fit.

CORBRIDGE
materials: about $125...

time: depends upon your skills and the method you use to assemble it.

My best time is 12 hours, average is 20-24, most guys with some skill can do one in about 30 -32 hours.. little or no skill: 40-50hours.

USING THE SPEAR ONE HANDED

I lashed a hand stop onto mine about 2/3rds of the way back

Used thong.. notched the rattan... some glue. lay the center of the strap on the rattan and counter wrap...covered in grip tape..

This gave excellent grip with a clamshell gauntlet.

There are a series of brushes used for wall papering that use hair... sometimes called a hanger's brush

You might also look at roofers brushes

Each of these are likely available at any hardware store.

For up to 14g I use a hammer and a drift punch and a lead hammering block. Fast. The tool's reach is limited by the length of my arms. Starter divet on 14g. Small holes are easy enough. Might be that many veggie oils dry on non porous surfaces and can become sticky.

Many go rancid quickly like olive oil!

Mix walnut oil with beeswax to make a paste for leather treatment. Don't need much.

You can also reshape a tube punch. I did something similar for a pair of Roman shoes for Mrs Centurio. Hammered tube punch into a triangle, then ended up using a triangular file to refine the shape of the punch by hammering against it to attain nice square edges and clean corners
