Your costume friend is an idiot. The date may be a little early but not later then 1420.

Correct I have not seen anything more then the published bit. The yogh thing is understandable, the yogh generally goes away earlier then the thorn and there is no movement to return it to the English language like there is with the thorn. I will contact my friend in England who I shared the Ashmole...

Re: Hardened leather armour 15th century English recipe

I'm having trouble following this. Partly because it is only the beginning and ending of the recipe. the ... section is in the manuscript but not in the published edition. It seems, in general, like this procedure has us making a thing with two thicknesses of leather glued together with the flesh s...

Hardened leather armour 15th century English recipe

So I avoided being put on a 72 hour hold and then getting rear ended by a semi who had to go into the ditch as I had to go on to the shoulder to avoid the car infront of me. So I've decided to reveal more information I've been keeping secret. Index of Middle English Prose Handlist IX ASHMOLE 1389 p3...

Since I've never got off my butt and actually done anything in a long time I thought I would share a super secret material I came across for making brigs and what not that can use 1 1/4 in wide strapping. What you want to find is steel strapping to the specification ANSI A225.1 It is a high tensile ...

This sort of thing is especially bad among 15th century English historians. It is a historiography thing. A well trained historian would not bother trying to decide the exact date unless they were going to really find out. Speculating when things happened by playing funny math is not really what his...

First off the Church at that point in time was not good about documenting that stuff. The rise of that sort of document is generally a product of the Reformation. Secondly you are assuming that there aren't documents that encompass all of those things or that give a clear way to calculate the date. ...

Actually it isn't as different as you think. If I asked you to name the date of the combat of thirty tournament at last pennsic without looking it up there is a decent chance you would be close but not right. If we looked at an actual document from it then it would likely have the exact date, same i...

You really should look through the IMAREAL database as there are more armour combinations in 15th century Germany then many think and a lot of the really uber high gothic suits are quite late. You find lots of big shield shapes in southern Europe but they tend to be at least slightly curved and tend to have more rounded edges the a sharp 90 degrees. The question with historical research is when and where. You can document just about anything if you have 1000 years and a whole continent as...

Instead of trying to make something fit something you are better off finding what is appropriate. There are a lot of depictions of Germans tourneying in helmets that would become the frogmouth. Vaughan's book on Charles is a must read if you are interested in this and are a English reader. Especially since it is not strictly chronological but thematic so certain details are not always where you might want them to be. I'm sure Chef will post when he gets around to it.

The other possibility would be to find someone who references that article. So looking through notes and bibliographies of armor works written after we think this article was published might lead us to the original location.
