Cool photo album. I've never seen those particular suits before, and I'm just starting to work with that lamellar/scale looking combination, though in a Chinese suit. I'm sending an emai!

Put me among the interested for whatever you turn up. However, for the time being, I need to remain skeptical. There are a huge number of lamellar plates in existance from just about every dynasty that have either been found as part of a suit or individually..and yet none of these have been found. ...

Hi, I know this thread is getting old, but I don't get online like I used to with the kids and all. I read the other thread about the inconsistencies between this design of armour and pretty much everything else. I also am bothered by the apparent wastage and expecially by the no surviving armours. ...

Found a lamella in this book from Turkestan

Here's an interesting diagram of a lamella found in Chinese Turkestan. You'll have to read the (online) book to find details about the excavation - Sorry, don't have time to pore through it right now!

Price of SS sheets

Can anyone help me with an approximate retail price for a 4x10 sheet of 20g (0.035) stainless? I'm trying to get a feel for the value of some smaller pieces I am looking at.

This is 304 finish #4

Thanks! Lu-shan

A finished bow can look like damn near anything when it is done, really. There are some shapes that are more efficient than others, so you will see those shapes recurring through history. One of the most common things to see is a narrow (in profile) limb tip. Certain Native American bow styles had w...

John, Welcome to the AA and thanks for your experiences. We have a local armourer who could probably bang them out if there is any tweaking necessary, but if they are Waldryks, and he is willing to refurbish them, then I'll certainly look into that as well. I just want to have them in time for Gulf ...

I've always been meaning to try that "stops-rust" that comes in a spray can. It turns the metal black and really does keep rust from coming back, at least on my 4x4. I assume it is chemically bluing the metal in some way, but it is more black in color and way more rust resistant than regular salt bl...

I've seen the way Yumi are made (in pictures), and from the large reflex that is built in and the narrowness of the limbs, I imagine it would not take much of a mistake to flip a limb over. That would certainly be the end of the bow. I can see why you would want to perfect your technique on a machin...

Help with SCA gauntlet fitting

Greetings, I just traded for some used SS gauntlets. They have a solid, pivoting thumb, and I think they are Waldryk's pattern: m Right now, the finger and thumb lames meet, with a slight tendency for the thumb to ride over the fingers. Is this right? It seems that the end finger plate can hit the k...

Well, it really depends on the bow, but in general, if you are building a bow with a pre-defined profile (flatbow, R/D, Recurve), once you cut down the profile from the sides, then the only shaping left to do is on the belly. You don't take wood off there to fit a profile, instead you take wood off ...

Artemis, The profile of a bow is what it looks like when someone is pointing it at you, that is, the width along the limb. He is telling you to make it parallel for the whole length, then taper down the tips. Narrow tips are good because they are lighter. You will do alot of "eyeballing", even with ...

When it was explained to me as a newby (BTW, I was told to DO it) it involved mainly the application of the sword to the helm. When the combo is struck, you claim a sword block.

I found the practice distasteful, and so don't do it.

Buqu, I thought so too, but I have seen pieces of Han dynasty cast bronze armours, so maybe there is a connection there. I'm starting a suit of scale (long-time readers know what kind!), and I had a few questions. Has anyone used canvas tarps as backing? I was thinking 2 layers of 10oz.
