Hi Yojimbo
I use a GDFB aventail on my Bascinet. It fits mine ok. They sell rings too if you need to do an expansion. Pic of me at Raglan castle 2010 attached

from looking at the two pics I reckon that the blank is marked a couple of inches narrower at the base than your original. This might be perspective tho. I would draw it out again (or use tape to mark it) with the base about 1" wider on each side then check to see how it looks. It is not too far off...

Hi
It is more to do with how the helmet interacts with your Gorget/aventail/whatever else you might have rather than the distance below your chin. As long as you can't get a stick in there you will be fine.

Raglan is an amazing experience. I would reccommend it to anyone. Fighting Thomas under torchlight on the bridge over a 30ft drop into the moat was a highlight of the weekend and that kit is even better close up than on pics. wot I made earlier

Hi All Made these elbows for a mate of mine. Inspired by a couple of the leg harnesses out of the Churburg Armouries book. Personally I reckon its the best bit of metalwork that I have done so far. Planning to match them up with some Tuliped vambraces and a Canon some time in the next few weeks. Any...

Appreciate the advice.

Been playing around with masking tape straps and set of dickies gloves. Seems to work well, just a bit of mouse mat behind needed in a couple of places.

Hopefully I will get over my typing dyslexia soon :).

Srapping mitten gauntlets

Leather all the way!

More durable than canvas which cuts down on rebuild frequency and time.

I have used either a decent quality suede or any 2-3 mm flexible leather.

What are you using for plates?

Linishing

Hi Vigmund I have been browsing hte second hand industrial tool places like: http://www.rileysurfaceworld.co.uk Might find something here or from similar suppliers. The key word for the UK (not to sure about Germany) is Linishing. Looking for belt sanders just gets you the hand held types. Rgds Alex

When forge welding cones I assume you would support it on a stake like that one and hit it from the outside?

Question for Andrew Not disputing you at all, more of a technique question. how do you keep it hot for long enough to get a weld on thin plate? I would go with the B+Q 1/2" galvanised roofing nails and a set of bolt cutters to trim them as end nippers can be a bit hard on the hands after the first 100 or so. The ones I make now are 18g and the lads have a lot easier time getting them on and off.
