I hope this link works... I've always liked this embroidery fragment, silk, in the muse moyen age, originally from Spain possibly, but it's a nice open pattern and extant and all: http://www.photo.rmn.fr/cf/htm/CSearchZ.aspx?o=&Total=8&FP=1484218&E=2K1KTS23NOH53&SID=2K1KTS23NOH53&New=T&Pic=5&SubE=2C...

Most of the time when I am doing calligraphy from a particular time period I will look up pictures of text pages and go through and get an alphabet from that. You will notice as you look that some times a scribe will make the letter A (for example) three different ways on the same page! Also there i...

Lovely! I love the quality of line in this time period :) Pen and ink work is one of the few areas where it is cheaper to go authentic, revel in that, heh ;) though when you switch to feather quills you'll realize quickly why the technology advanced to metal nibs! ;) Personally making ink is no mess...

Love veils :) A lot of people are hesitant about wearing them, usually the last two things people get into garb are their heads and their feet ;) but they really dress up an outfit and can be practical too; I find veils actually can help me keep cool at outdoor events (hey, it's wear-able shade!) an...

Nope; no odd camping rules.
All rules are posted here: http://cleftlands.cwru.edu/events/nowm14rules.html
The only real concern is for safety; keep your fire in fire pits and don't pitch your tent over it

No added fee for camping, anyone who signs a minor waver (17 and under) gets in free; such a deal! There is an inexpensive breakfast tavern and a lunch tavern run by the Ukranian camp featuring Perogi and Burgers that will also be open for dinner. Well said Mord, no art exists in a vacuum. Often times we focus on a particular extant object, and don't consider it in context. Personally, I really love it when there is a limited focus event that I can get an outfit ready for "ooo! The event this weekend has a 12th century theme! Where's my Bliau...

"Drawing really doesn't come into its own as a medium until the rise of paper in the 15th century," There are a number of Italian pre-Durer drawings in museums, again studies and reference, either for practice or for models Cut examples out to save space; what you say is true. My point is more that...

Not that I've seen yet myself, though I do know I've seen designs for jewelry, and isn't decorative leatherwork kind of jewelry? ;) It is quite likely that most of the planning and sketching was done on temporary media (like the gessoed boards or wax tablets mentioned above) and for those done on pa...

But to enter something into a competition means you want feedback, because feedback is part of the judging process. No judge can determine that the entrant doesn't want feedback unless the entrant specifies that. Respectfully m'seur, no. I know at least I have entered a competition with no desire f...

Very excellent comments, I just have two minor notes to add; 1. Not everyone enters an A&S Competition for the same reason It can be tempting as a judge to assume this person wants feedback... maybe they just wanted to make sure there were enough entries for the faire to be successful or their frien...

If you frame on your own make sure you get archival quality mats, papers and tapes, and I would suggest 'floating' the piece in the center, rather than having the mat touch it at all.
