Re: An Outsider's Impression of an SCA Fighter Practice

In Bryn Gwlad Sir Giotto runs a weekly technical training session on a different night from the main practice where he teaches his system of body mechanics and technique on an introductory level. When is Sir Giotto's practice? And if you don't mind, when are other heavy practices held in the area? ...

There is a very good practice in Bedford on Wednesday night. You would be welcome to come by any of these. Is the Tuesday night practic...

When you do those coats of arms things and they always give you some coat of arms for a name similar to yours that doesn't really belong to you--my dad did that a few years ago. Some Cheap Arms up on eBay

I put some used arms up on eBay. Stainless lames and cops, thick leather vambraces and rerebraces. Size large to extra-large. Seens lots of use but pretty nice armor underneath the wear.

Oh, and I use some 18 gauge mild plates on the back of my kidney belt. Not a place I'm hit a lot but when they are hit, they take some decent dents. I feel better with them there but I can't imagine dealing with the upkeep on a piece I expected to get hit a lot.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the fact that gauges weren't used in period. I think it's an important fact in this discussion. Historic pieces generally aren't one uniform thickness all the way through. I think the book is actually saying that pieces (the edges, etc) of a particular lame or what...

Thanks. I'm glad to hear that. I like to see the local people, businesses, and homes as much as tourist stuff when I am in a new city. I feel like you don't really get to know a place at all if you take mechanized travel everywhere.
