Re: An Outsider's Impression of an SCA Fighter Practice
In Bryn Gwlad Sir Giotto runs a weekly technical training session on a different night from the main practice where he teaches his system of body mechanics and technique on an introductory level. When is Sir Giotto's practice? And if you don't mind, when are other heavy practices held in the area? ...

There are practices in the area pretty much all through the week. Dallas and Ft. Worth both have practices on Sunday and I have a small practice on Tuesday nights. There is a very good practice in Bedford on Wednesday night. You would be welcome to come by any of these. Is the Tuesday night practic...

I left a test piece of spring steel out for 60 days to test it. No rust. Holds up to handling great.

When you do those coats of arms things and they always give you some coat of arms for a name similar to yours that doesn't really belong to you--my dad did that a few years ago. The motto of the Carruthers clan was "Promptus et Fidelis" or " Ready and Faithful" . I've always liked that a lot and I w...

Some Cheap Arms up on eBay
I put some used arms up on eBay. Stainless lames and cops, thick leather vambraces and rerebraces. Size large to extra-large. Seens lots of use but pretty nice armor underneath the wear.

Dan, how would you protect something like that from sweat? Here in Texas all of my thickest leather armor soaks through completely. Everything is soft by the end of practice. I had one of my elbow cops from Torvaldr collapse the other day. Should I line the pieces with something? Or maybe co...

Gregory, I was in a very similar position a few years ago. I wanted to spend $500 on a close helm in mild steel. Not a penny more. I started talking to Patrick Thaden. I ended up getting my helm in spring steel. I spent more but I am soooo glad I did. I know it can be very hard but I promise you tha...

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the fact that gauges weren't used in period. I think it's an important fact in this discussion. Historic pieces generally aren't one uniform thickness all the way through. I think the book is actually saying that pieces (the edges, etc) of a particular lame or what...

http://members.chello.at/hotel.golden.baer.vienna/eng/index.html The above link is my hotel if that has any bearing on any recommendations. Jamie , that would be awesome. I'll definitely take you up on that offer for a personal tour. My level of familiarity with Vienna is best described as non-existent at this point. This will be the first time I've ever travelled overseas. I think having a guide, especially one with similar interests,...

My tuition is ~$29,000 a year. As far as I'm concerned, I paid for it. :D Thanks for the well-wishing though. Gregory , you should leave an Archive favor stashed somewhere. What to see in Vienna?
So, I am on an academic competion team for my law school that competes in Vienna in April. And the school pays for the whole thing. How sweet is that? We'll be there for 10-12 days. I'll have some spare time. Where should I go? What are the "don't miss it" attractions? I promise to take and share lo...

*PICS ADDED* Sir Vitus's Shield Review
So, about a year ago I bought a really nice shield blank off an archiver. One of the GAA type shields made by a boat builder. I removed the covering from it, bought a shield basket, bought some edging and planned out where to place my straps. I took it over to my parents' house to use some of my ste...

Hmmm . . . a few things. I have a 14 gauge spring steel close helm. It's the first one on this page: http://www.thadenarmory.com/gallery/gallery_helmets.htm My helm makes it hard for rattan shots to land just right sometimes. It's just harder than most people's helmets. It would be way, way more pro...
