Shop Layout Advice
At long last I have my own place with plenty of shop space. Here our pictures of the building I intend to use as an armoury shop:

The building is about 12' X 14' inside. How would you guys go about layout the inside?

Solid links in mail
Thanks to the article posted out here on Erik D Schmid I read the US Steel article on solid links in mail.(m) Brillant stuff really and I have a deep envy for people who get examine real links of real mail. But, It seems to me that a medieval smith might have a much simple way to make solid links th...

I would suggest to anyone who thought it would not have an effect that try fencing after they have a nail driven through their hands. In my experiences having a spiky metal things driven through my hands makes them very hard to use for at least a few minutes. Even something as shallow as a dog's too...

Has anybody out there tried to recreate Wisby Gauntlet No. 1? Has anyone tried to make it SCA legal. I like it for it's simplicity and thought I'd give it a try.

You might want to look for Paso Fino saddle trees. THey are very simliar to those pictured above. Especially the Fig 1 Avar warrior saddle. Other south america saddles are also very similar. I got mine off ebay for entireloy to much money but if looked around you might find a deal. Most custom saddl...

Wham-O Powermaster Crossbows
I have two of these fine (if not very medieval) crossbows. But I don't have a manual. Anybody out there have a source for manuals? Or a photocopy, scan or any copy at all? I'd really like to read up on tuning , maintence etc etc.

I'm assuming you are using plywood. Look closely at the edges of the wood and you will see that each piece is made of an odd number of layers. The direction of the grain alternates with the layers. To get a heater that keeps it shape you want each pice of plywood laid so that the grain runs up and do...

I've been a witness to some chariot racing with ponies. It's alot like being a witness to a car accident. Ponies are stubborn, strong, and sometimes down right mean. Getting more than one to go in the same direction is tough enough without having to try to make them go in the direction you want them...

I prefer the balance of a curved heater. The closer my forearm is to the center of gravity the less I have to work to keep it in position. When I was younger and had more strength and stamina it didn't matter so much. Now that I'm old and lazy I really prefer curved. That's assuming that the shield ...

I've been trying (with some success) to make hammered medieval coins. This lead (no pun!) me to search out cheap sources of pewter. I was shocked to discover what pewter really is. Medievally it was an alloy of lead and tin. With the discovery of lead posioning it was changed to have less and less l...

Do not use canola oil! It is too thick and gunky. It never really dries down. Do not use your oven on the "Self Clean" setting whle your wife is pregnant (even if she is out of the house) to remove canola oil from your mail. It produces huge volumes of stinky (the wife's problem) smoke. It does leav...

Pewter is really tin. According to the FTC to be called pewter the alloy has to be at least 90% tin. Lead Free solder sold in hardware stores is also a high tin alloy. It usually will have some antimony mixed in maybe some silver or copper. Other chance buys of cheap lead free solder the cheapest so...

Heather Rope
I recently came accross a comment about people in scotland making rope out of heather. Does any one know of a good reference for this? Or the process for making heather into rope? I've gotten pretty handing at making rope in general but don't know how the fiber was extracted from the heather.

The closest thing to medieval saddle trees that are comericialy available today are Paso fino saddle trees and other similiar central/south american riding rigs. But depending on what kind of horse your riding the tree may not fit the horse. An ill fitting saddle is a bad thing for a horse, and pote...

No more will our armor bags need to reek like the living dead! Neow there is steel that prevents (or at least a coating on steel) nasty little no see'ums from propagating and spreading their foul odors!
