Re: Rivets too tight.
I use the spacer already but some of the comments here lead me to believe I'm pounding too hard. The more I think about it I tend to work the center of the rivet too much and expanding the shank too much.

Rivets too tight.
Something I've always struggled with. I do an ok job of fitting a lame to another lame or something. Its supposed to articulate. with a dry fitting using either 3mm screws or cleko the fit is pretty good. When I go to rivet it's just to tight and stiff. I tried a spacer between the two pieces but th...

Society for CREATIVE! Anachronism. They are fighting and having fun. We pay to play this game we all love. This kind of bickering kills the game. Well, when I see people doing a better job of Historical Reenactment wearing period armour and raising the level of their education I think the game is t...

Re: Lamellar-vikings-normans real or invented for sca?
When the goal post keeps moving no amount of evidence is ever enough. When and where was the goal post moved? Plan and simple, "no evidence" has been provided I think. As I've stated before, its not about mail, or 14th century armour, or padded clothing, this thread is about Lamellar. The goalpost ...

wow, lots of people don't want to give up lamellar. yet those who want to prove its prevalence have yet to prove anything. You cant prove use by attacking the chainmail argument. some people stated finds. Please stop saying "we have them in finds and digs" really? do you know that for sure? I'm look...

So far my original request has not been met. I'm not saying they didn't have it. I'm saying prove it. You cant justify they could have had it because it rusts away, reused it. There are lots of ways we prove Viking furniture existed as well as clothing. People do lots of research and present their p...

Lamellar-vikings-normans real or invented for sca?
I see so many pre-14thc people wanting lamellar armour. These tend to be the Viking/Norse, Norman, and Saxon persona. My question is "really, Lamellar?" As a student of history I just don't see the reference. Lamellar has become the go-to armour of the early period fighters. Its light, its protectiv...

I think the biggest problem is the top looks to be a one piece. I dont think I've seen a single Lobster pot from England that didn't have a raised seam down the center.

There are some problems you may run up against. 1. there is nothing on that page that says that image is owned by you. secondly, You as the person in the shot may or may not own the image. If you signed a photography release for the photographer, then most likely they own the image outright. Saying ...

Re: Inquiry about stitching glove to gauntlet
you could so cut down some of the leather width. By the way where is your padding? I dont know why people think
1 they didn't pad their gauntlets
2. why they think a tiny layer of steel only will protect their finger tips.
but yes you should think of cutting those down a little.

Re: 16th century gauntlet mobility AKA stupid thumb wing thi
I fight in such a type of gauntlet. I do not have this problem. there are several things in place that prevent the problem you are talking about. 1. The length is not as long as you think it should be. The tip point of the bottom of this plate absolutely is not longer than the thumb bone. 2. It has ...

Re: Wisby gauntlet musing/question
Padding, Padding is the key to turning a good pair of finger gauntlets into a great pair. I use a layer of compressed wool felt between the leather and the glove. if you are talking SCA the rule still needs to be hard over soft. and steel plates on a pair of gloves is not hard over soft. For me weld...

I wish I could speak to the technical points, but I cant. I can only speak to my experience. I've only recently started experiments with 4130. I oil quench after a temp of 811c. What I found was 4130 does not scale up as much as the 1050, with using the oil,(synthetic Trans fluid actually) I'm not g...

Re: Steel prices
yes and no. no in that I bought 11 sheets for 600$ a year back. yes, because you only wanted 1 sheet, and there is usually a min charge. There is a minimum charge usually because they have to take the roll down, load it in the machine and cut. so you might want to ask if that's a by weight charge or...

Re: is this how 12 g mild steel should behave?
I'm worried that you think its still 12g. it depends on how the helm was formed. If its a two part dished, then it may have started out 12g, but after dishing then grinding I'd say more like 14g. I've seen some of the BOTN 14 helms do that but not a 12g.

Re: Will the BoTN change the SCA:s HF game?
My best hope is that the idea of singles combat with steel weapons be added as another class of combat, i.e if you want to do it, great, if not great, or that deeds of arms where armour as worn be more prevalent. That would be cool. We call it Cut & Thrust. ;) are you saying that cut and thrust is ...
