Re: And he threw a rising flat snap into his opponent's
Shot I threw: My first ever Raglan castle event. I think my third or fourth SCA event - ever. I had been torn to pieces by pretty much everyone I went near for most of the melee. I ended up in a one on one with the then King of Drachenwald (Thorvald ... I think). I knew I was simply a dead man stand...

Re: Single Most Painful Shot given/Received By You?
I was fighting in a re-enactment battle a few years ago. It was adlibbed so the winner was whomever won, everything was still fought within the traditional ruleset and we were to use minimum force etc. There was one guy who REALLY hated losing and I ended up facing him as the sides broke up. He has ...

Re: Frustrated with fighting
If I find I am having trouble beating a weapon combination I pick them up and use them. If I am having trouble fighting a tall opponent who is using a glaive then I fight a shorter person and use a glaive. I find I soon learn where the gaps are and I have fun and variety doing it!

My experience with an SCA dagger is that no one takes it unless it hits them in the visor.

Re: Weight Training for SCA fighting
Dude, you do not have to use kettlebells, you have our permission not to. Thanks, although that would be a shame as I already have some! I does not seem like you want to take us at our word, Do what you want. Someone asked, we answered. I am happy to accept people's word but no one seems to be able...

Outside of that, as others have said, Kettlebells! I've been an athlete all my life. 3-4x a week in the gym as well to stay fit. Switched to kettlebells about two months ago and they have been kicking my ass in the best of ways. I am still confused - why can you not work out as intensely with dumbb...

Re: SCA polearm techniques
So regarding SCA polearm (which I'm fairly new to), just want to clarify a few things to make sure I'm not using any illegal techniques: 1) Can I stab with the butt end assuming both ends are padded safely for thrusting (I think you can't swing with the butt end to strike with?) 2) Can I swing usin...

Just cause I have nowhere else to brag about it. I having being doing the RKC Rite of Passage 12 week kettlebell program. I am currently ending week 8. At the end of week 8 you do your first test. It is the Secret Service Snatch Test, using a 50 lbs kettlebell, you do snatches for 10 minutes. The g...

Re: Tuchux banned from Pennsic?
It does seem like some of the posters want to punish many for the crimes of a few in order to send a message. I'm not sure that's a good message for the SCA. I a personal example of when equal rule enforcement failed, while trying to say we should work on enforcing our rules we have better, before ...

This is slightly weird, we have had two break in our shire and there are only about half a dozen active fighters.
This seems quite far above what looks like the average.

Re: Weight Training for SCA fighting
It appeared that many of the other statements were comparing in my opinion apples to oranges in terms of exercises. Comparing jogging related to kettlebell lifts does not give you an answer as to whether kettlebells are better than dumbbells. Agreed. Kettlebells allow for some different grips and a...

I am making the assumption that with the phrase "Slowly moving a weight from a still position to a still position" that he is referring to more traditional weight lifting exercises as opposed to Olympic lifts like the snatch. I think he is comparing say the bench press to the snatch as opposed to a...

Re: Weight Training for SCA fighting
Here is another reason. Kettlebell snatches burn more calories than most any other exercise. I read somewhere that it is equal to running under a 6 minute mile. That is a pretty good trade off for us old fat farts with bad knees who hate to run. Also, I just like swinging things around.... I strong...

Re: Weight Training for SCA fighting
Stefan - it has to do with balance and involving more activity of small muscle groups in controlling the object. Standard dumbells are nicely balanced, kettlebells not so much. I used to work adjustable dumbells with all the weight on one end. A bag of sand might be even better for involving the ex...

To add to what Vitus said, look up "Viking Warrior Workout" by Kenneth Jay (Don't let the name fool you, nothing really to do with Vikings) but there is nothing on the planet better for increasing your V02 Max, which helps greatly with our sport. Re: Weight Training for SCA fighting
The power clean and the kettlebell snatch train your FAST TWITCH muscle fibers to perform at their genetic limit. Slowly moving a weight from a still position to a still position is fine- moving that weight as fast as possible will make every part of your body as fast as it possibly get. Power clea...

Surely I do the same exercises with dumbbells which are cheaper and I can change the weight of them. The body does not know what the weight is (...

Re: Weight Training for SCA fighting
Not sure it is fair to say that the bench press is useless, it develops horizontal pushing strength and should be part of a balanced training program.
It is not a silver bullet by itself and it not a must have exercise (none of them are) but it is certainly not useless.

Easiest one: The Uncovered Jockfighter vs the Reenactor The Reenactor feels as if the Jockfighter is pissing on his epic medieval parade and points this out in a butthurt manner. I am not a big name in the SCA, or a medium name, or a small name - if fact I am not even sure if I technically have a name. However:
Rumour has it that Duke Uthur (sp?) and Duke Jade are awesome.
I have fought with Duke Alaric - although he is in Australia now - and he is godlike when fighting!

Re: Weight Training for SCA fighting
It depends on what you need to work on: Do you find yourself running out of breath first? Do you find that you can breath but your arms/legs/whatever has no strength after a short while? Do you find that once you are slightly gassed or out of position you do not have the strength to compensate? Your...
