Re: Arbalest à Tillolles

I just checked Thom Richardson's " The Tower Armoury in the Fourteenth Century.". In the section on crossbows he lists and account from Mildenhall dated 10 June 1345. Here is a list of materials purchased to make 40 composite crossbows: 40 bowstaves 40 staves for the tiller 12lb of sinew for the com...

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

Gustovic, Well done. I had plans in my sketchook to try this a few years ago. I'm happy to see that it works. I'm going to have to give this a go. I have always cast mine from brass because I never wanted to hand file 35 iron vervelles for a bascinet. Your method looks very promising. Thanks, Rob

Re: Churburg to sell armour of Galeazzo da Arco

Has anyone considered the possibility that if Lauder is seriously considering acquiring this, that he already knows that the pauldrons most likely go the the Ulrich IX armour? Maybe he thinks he will be getting two important pieces from Churburg.

Woodstock armoury,
You should look at some of the top down views of sallets shown in Goll's thesis. You will be surprised at how sharp they are in the front.

I am pleased to see that you are building this. I have a question, though. Have you checked to see if it will fit into your kiln? That is a pretty big helmet.

What about the bascinet formerly owned by sir Noel Patton? It's point has been flattened, the face opening recut, and the lower edge rolled.

Mac, Sorry for the late reply. Your amperage setting depends on the thickness of the metal you are welding and the diameter of the rod you are using. Do you have any drops of your parent stock to test weld on? Also, be careful about getting weld splatter on your nicely machined knuckle surfaces. I w...

Mac,
Be sure to practice on some scrap before trying to weld up your knuckle form. Also, get some new, dry rods. And don't forget to grind some small levels where you plan on welding.

How many amps is your welder and how thick is the steel? It looks like you have several things going on here. I think you need to turn the regulator up to increase the amount of shielding gas around the weld puddle. Second try turning up the amps and run the machine a little hotter. This will mean y...

The hinge on Jean's bascinet is atypical also. It has two knuckles while most surviving bascinets have three.

Christian, As Mac said, I think anyone would have a difficult time raising to that depth in four hours. I've raised a lot of deep helmets and a few breastplates, and I could not do it that short of a time. Sinking or dishing to that depth is entirely possible, but you are going to end up thinner tha...

I decided to have a go at making one of these this weekend. Since I have access to a CNC router at work, I had my router operator cut me the pattern out of .040" aluminum. Next, the pattern was cut out of .072" mild steel with a jigsaw. The edges were cleaned up and deburred with a combination of th...

I would say, without a doubt, that these are copies of Grettir's gauntlets. The extra plate on the back of the hand is pretty much a dead giveaway. He has been making this design since 1989. Probably since before this armourer was born.

I find it interesting how the crack radiates out from the corner of the "pyramid". Wonder if the stress risers were introduced when the gadling was formed or if the damage occurred while it was in the Thames.

I use a Harris #9 welding tip for a lot of hot work. It makes a nice sized flame and uses less gas than the rosebud head. I still use the rosebud for heavier gauges and some helmet work.

You will want to use "buff" leather. Apparently Clayton's in the UK is the only place that still carries it:

Hold onto your wallet, it is not cheap.
