Re: Tinker 9th cen Sword question.
I've used the blunt and like it very much, nice shaped blade and fuller, good weight (not too heavy), nice balance, quite inexpensive from KOA, stainless fittings that don't stand out as stainless, leather wrapped grip and scabbard. The blade is hard steel but still nicks up from edge to edge shots/...

Re: can you oxy fuel weld stainless?
Ha! Yeah it's maybe anti-intuitive, but it makes sense to have the shielding effect of the acetylene. Sorry had a busy week, it's definately 4x as schreiber says (henrob is cobra torch, also called dillon) but at the armour thicknesses we weld the total flame length is not really all that long. Did ...

Re: can you oxy fuel weld stainless?
With the cobra torch you use more acetylene than oxygen, the extra acetylene acts as a shield against the oxidisation of the oxygen. From memory the outer flame should be four times longer than the inner flame, want me to check the notes? I've usd tig rods, cut strip, ss bicycle spokes, ss wire from...

Re: Roper Whitney No.7 Dies
Hey can someone please take a measurement of a no.8 die for me? I bought these so long ago I'm now confused about what punch they're for. I only know they're too big to fit in my punch! (I'll sell them when I've worked out what they are  ) I think they're for a no.8. My confusion began when I b...

Re: Floor for armour shop
If I was building from scratch it would depend on finances. Concrete is good ...a friend of mine who is a silversmith converted his dirt-floored garage into a studio and used free bricks standing on end to surface the floor. They are packed down and together really solid with the dirt forming a kind...

Ah this is good, its great to have some more ideas thrown around. I find whenever I start a more complex wood project it takes all my metal po...

Thanks Hal and Alti, I appreciate you guys responding.
4-5 inches is quite impressive for plywood, now I just need to find me a truck rim OR its a damn good excuse to buy an anvil!
How much depth did you get Hal?
Cheers,
Dave.

Re: Cap'n Atli - Convex Shield how to?
Hey Hal, thanks for your reply - I think your shield was in that earlier topic along with Cap'n Atlis quote. How deep is the dishing on your shield? How many layers of ply did you use? If you used layers, did you wet and weight them seperately before drying out and gluing? Just trying to get an idea...

Cap'n Atli - Convex Shield how to?
Hi Cap'n, I'm keen to make a convex shield and came across an earlier posting you made. Hope you can answer a couple of questions about your method... How many inches/cms of depth did you get in the dishing? Did you have to make any cuts in the blank or anything else before dishing? "I've done a dis...

Thanks! I've yet to make anything from woollen fabric apart from blankets, so I'm not familiar with the descriptive terms used, the weave types or anything like that.

Adric, I like that idea. Hal, you may be right, if I can't make it work I'll just stick to the rivets! You can just make out the flush rivets on the right cheekplate. It all seems very firm, but the customer plays steel and I'm worried an edge blow may knock the edging loose. Probably not to the che...

please help me braze on brass channel edging!
Hi, A while ago I posted some in progress shots of a coppergate helm that I was starting to put brass bling on. It was suggested that I braze the edging on rather than rely on the tiny rivets I was starting to use. Here is a pic of the edging on a cheekplate: I already know how to braze, just don't ...

More awake now :) My thought is that it adds more surface area for more oxidising reaction on the piece of steel. And yes, seems to speed up the process. Have you ever noticed stainless getting rusty - maybe not rusty but stained - when in contact with rusting mild steel over time? I've been treatin...

Very tired, but I will try to write a coherent post :? 1. Soak your steel in vinegar overnight. 2. Degrease if you want an even patina. Omit this step if you want the patchy look. 3. Paint on some muriatic/hydrochloric acid. Leave for 15 mins then rinse off with a hose. Observe all the usual precaus...

Hi, does anyone have an image of the hasps from this chest? I have made all the wooden elements of this chest - have just finished carving the underside and curving the top of the lid - and have now started work on the metal elements. I have just cut out the lock plate and cut the keyhole into it. I...
