Re: LF Books on medieval peasant material culture
The reviews on that particular piece are rather low. The Luttrell Psalter by the same author has better reviews. Is there much difference? Should I get the one on rural depictions because of its focus? Thanks! It depends on what you're looking for. I suspect a lot of the people who ordered Medieval...

New out from the Met: "Islamic Arms and Armor"
Thought this new book would be of interest over here ... 8) Islamic Arms and Armor in The Metropolitan Museum of Art [/i][/url] From its origins in the 7th century, armor and weaponry were central to Islamic culture not only as a means of conquest and the spread of faith, but also as symbols of stat...

This looks a bit like a gardecorps, but with a bit of embroidered embellishment.
See http://larsdatter.com/gardecorps.htm for some links to historical examples and some modern re-creations.
(There's also a linkspage with images of knighting ceremonies, in case that's of interest.)

Go for a button-shoulder cloak with a separate hood. http://larsdatter.com/cloaks.htm  http://larsdatter.com/hoods.htm It has the advantages of being separate garments (so you can take the hood off and just wear the cloak, or you can wear the cloak with the hood, or you can adjust one...

Re: Question: 14th C. children's garb
You'll find some examples at http://larsdatter.com/children.htm For a baby, I'd suggest a white shirt with a large neckline, along the lines of the Durán Madonna . (This is actually mid-15th century, but it's practical and suitable for a small infant.) You might also want to check out http://larsdat...

There's a recipe for a hardtack-like biscuit in the Manual de Mugeres, but that's 16th century -- may not be quite early enough for you.

Some more extant flags & banners at http://www.larsdatter.com/banners.htm too. A lot of the silk-banner-painting tutorials in the SCA are using a resist technique that's not historically accurate for western Europe, AFAIK, but seems to have been done on some textiles in Asia. It produces very pretty...

I carried Wil's helmet for a demo once, and I didn't get a special stick. I feel cheated. King Rene didn't say anything about special sticks. He just said to use lance truncheons. BNF Français 2692 has a helmet carried by hand by one squire who's vanishing into the crease between fols. 46v and 47.

Toasting is a modern convention in this context, rather than having the burden of a relationship with medieval etiquette (in which toasts, or even "Sitte þou nought to longe on nygthis by the cuppe, And sey 'wasseile' and 'drynkeheil,'" are done to drink to the health of people who are physically pr...
