Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it

If we are going to change anything I would rather see the helmet requirements change. I've met someone whose had his eye cut from a piece of loose duct tape, something that wouldn't have happened if we required perf. Perf would also allow for the use of the newer synthetic swords like the Penti whi...

Re: Pennsic 42 - any info?

One of the follow up posts to the mayor's FB post above explained it. Apparently the BOD wanted the Coopers to add the SCA as an insured party on their policy. The Coopers balked but then agreed.

Re: What about us little dudes?

Great advice from others in this thread. As someone 5'8" and 135-40, I'll expand a bit on what others have said about armor. Make sure it fits. Make sure it works. Larger fighters may often tell you that you are wearing too much armor. They may be mistaken. I've found that I need a bit more on the t...

I've heard good things about the Nerf Swords that came out a few years ago. They actually look like swords, rather than pool noodles with PVC in the middle. Not sure if they are legal for youth combat, but these are awesome. I got a pair for my 3-year-old and myself (she's getting good ;-). They ha...

Be on the lookout for stolen SCA items in Florence, SC. Forwarding this from a friend whose trailer got ripped off after returning home from War of the Wings. Sir Brother Amos the pious has a two handed crozius staff he uses as a polearm, and no one cares, because it fits his portrayal and is not done in disrespect.

It seemed ideal enough when he was trying to kill me with it this weekend. :D

I've recently tried rolling my own from the cut brass you can find in hobby stores. The still get beat all to hell, but at least they are fairly cheap and easy to make.

Ahh. I must be remembering the three step rule from the first Pennsic I fought. Glad to know we never used that.

I agree with Garik. In Atlantia I think we used to play with the 3-step charge rule, but not in years. I have both been knocked on my ass and have knocked others on theirs. No one has cried. It's all part of the fun of a charge.

The trollish "ass kissing" comment aside, as a spectacularly unspectacular fighter I love the Wednesday schedule of the last few years. Without a major battle, I found time to take a class, help out with the children's fete, and actually walk around a bit during the day. It was great. Plus the actua...

Your Grace Cuan. You can add me to the list of confirmed Atlanians with ulna fractures from a one-handed sword. Mine happened at WOW two years ago. The worst part is that it broke even though I was wearing a cloth-covered bucket plastic vambrace. To Matthieu, if you ever think about not wearing fore...

Good ideas all. Space was a bit of a concern as this all has to fit inside a Nissan Cube. The tent arrived Today and it is remarkably small. I may end up saving room from my current setup. I'm leaning towards a covered surplus cot for now with an eye toward looking at slat bed plans for a later proj...

I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of my first "period" tent. It's actually a civil war a-frame, but it's more period than the land pimple I have now. My question now is what do I sleep on? Should with a cot? If so, any suggestions on type? Im not really sure hat the period edding solution would have bee...

Well, thanks to Luther for starting this thread and Ceadda for the pics of his tent. I just used birthday money to order a A-frame tent from Fall Creek. No more land pimple and easyup for me. Now I need to make the polls . . . and buy a cot . . .

If you think regular video is bad, get ahold of a camera that shoots high framerate slow motion. I filmed myself in slo-mo Doug flat snaps on the Oslo shortly after I got my cast off from breaking my sword arm. It was the ugliest, most awkward thing I had ever seen. Very instructive though.

I can deal with split pole arms but having a giant larp head pole-ax would bug the hell out of me. I dunno. With a little research, a little imagination and a lot of tape, you can make something that is far from a giant larp head polearm. This is my new toy. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Fb1rl...

I was shocked when I lent that Polearm to someone and watched it being used from about 15 feet away. The contrast between black and silver really sells the illusion.

Period solutions are often best. We try to reinvent the wheel with all our modern mumbo jumbo but forget that the armour we wear and the associated soft kit were born of experience in battle. These men depended on their arms, armour and arming garments to keep them comfortable and alive. The foreth...

Not sure who they were, but back in the early 2000s there was a unit of 5-6 samurai bowmen who always hung together and fired in volleys. They were pretty awesome to watch.

Fighting in more period gear

So we had a tourney at the local sci-fi convention yesterday. The fighting surface is a textured concrete patio and I decided it would be a good time to try fighting in my Viking leather craft low boots. Since it was a demo and I wanted to look spiff, I decided to go ahead and wear chausses and brai...

Why not try it without the crosses and eagle? Counting the red, black, gold and fur, you've got four colors, which is a lot. I would echo Ziggy's suggestion. Or at least drop one of the two and have either three crosses or three eagles. And yeah, I know, I'm the guy to talk considering how complex ...

One day I'm going to buy a cheap but sharp sword, a piece of riveted mail made from so-so iron, and a pig carcass. Them I'm going to invite my SCA friends over and start wacking. I know experiments like this have been done, but I want to see what my regular blow does and what my friends' blows do.
