I remember reading here about using latex paint mixed in a 1(paint):3(h2o) ratio with water to "paint" the canvas & seal it That's a good ratio for painting one's tent because it thins the paint enough that it can get into the pores and not sit on top of the canvas. I used a 1:2 ratio when I painte...

I made five (completed four) gamurra (late 15th century Italian kirtles) and two giornea (tabard-like overgowns) in the month before Pennsic. I don't receommend changing one's persona and interest so late before a major event like that. I also painted stripes along the seam lines of my pavilion. Whi...

Hi Flitte,
My portable holes are from Panther Primitives. They're great for keeping banner poles upright but I wouldn't want to depend on them for keeping tent poles up.

I got the cotton batting for my husband's mid-to-late C14 arming doublet from Fabric.com . We had planned on using a medium-weight linen for the outside of the doublet but decided to go with a light wool upon recommendations by Tasha and Greta. The inside of the doublet will be lined with medium-wei...

Hair combs or pins
Does anyone know if we have extant hair combs or hair pins dating to mid-14th century and what they looked like? My shortish, modern hair needs some help staying in place when I wear the buns of insouciance or the braids of bling (thus named this past weekend). If ladies during the late 14th/early 1...

Back to the subject of recruitment - James B. had it right(again) - the St. Paddy's Day Bloodbath is a prime example of how it can be done right. I was at that event, and it was amazing. I'd love to know how many newcomers they got off of that event. Not many, unfortunately. A handful of folks who ...

I'm also guessing that archery in a non-archery area is verboten? Uh, yeah. I'm really jazzed about the Emprise and hope that we are able to pull it off. I do wonder, though, if all the infrastructure that people want to put into place (tents/galleries/extra combat areas) is going to be a problem w...

Did everybody carry prayer beads? Just about. You'll seem them depicted on folks in woodblocks as well as the formal portraits, and they are noted in many accounts. Since paternosters were religious in nature, they were typically outside sumptuary laws and one could show off one's wealth with osten...

I used a couple of these at Pennsic last year and I wish that they'd come back into stock so I could get a few more. The light generated was soft and amber (not that yucky blue-white from a lot of solar lanters) and the flicker was fairly realistic. The group I'm camping with has banned open flame s...

Well I understand that yes. Color is a problem in and of itself. The only way to truely understand what color something is would be to look at the object with your own eyes. Yes, unfortunately it seems like most extant garments are in lovely shades of browns these days. But yes, Charlotte explained...
